sesame seeds & more (PIC) UPDATE * 1
    #3357769 -

Well, decided to do a small test on a variety of grains laying around the house. Here's the photo of them beginning their 14 hour soak:

They are: mung beans --- popcorn --- soybeans --- quiona --- sesame seeds --- malted rye berries

Plan on shooting them up with Z strain Karo H2O then spawning composted horse poo.

I am really curious on how the sesame seeds will do. Found them super cheap in an ethnic food store, $5 for 7lbs. Bought up a bunch and plan on also testing them out on Mexicana-a for sclerotia production. Anyone tried this?

Will try to keep everyone updated on the progress.

*************************UPDATE****************************************

Yep ...still alive, just been super busy with the non-fungus areas of my life. Thanks for the concern. Sorry to take so long!! Also gotta apologize for the low amount of photos. Camera died, had to borrow one to take pics.

Here's the results:

Well I pretty much started this experiment just to see how some grains I had lying around would work as spawn. Maybe next time I'll just directly case and fruit the grains so I can get an idea of yield, potency.....etc. Originally planned to use the Z strain, but decided to stick with my one of my personal favorites thus far.....KSSS.

1. After a 14 hour soak, all grains were simmered for 45 minutes.
2. All grains rinsed and allowed to thoroughly drain after simmer.
3. Grains loaded into pint jars and PC'ed at 20psi for 1 hour.

-Quiona jars ended up looking like they contained a lump of play-dough
- Many berries in the malted rye jars burst
- Mung beans turned much darker. Went from green to almost black.
- Soy,popcorn, and sesame remained intact.

4. When jars cooled, all jars knocked up with ksss karo h20.
5. Kept at room temp (70 degrees) in dark.

here's what a few of them looked like:

soy.....sesame.....mung.....quiona.....(about 12 days)

mung.....quiona.....sesame.....(about 16 days)

Shortly after full colonization of all jars mixed and used to spawn 50/50 straw/composted horse poo bulk tub.

a quick summery each grain:

Soybeans-Very easy to shake apart individual beans before spawning. But large size of beans means fewer inoculation sites.

Popcorn- Same as soy, easy to shake apart kernels.

Sesame Seeds- Low amount of mycelium, also all jars succumbed to wet spot bacteria. Too hard to get moisture level correct.

Malted Rye- Don't see any advantage over rye berries. More expensive and kernels tend to burst. Also the higher sugar content of malted grains might add to risk of bacterial infection.

Mung Beans- Best performance out of the bunch. Big surprise to me.First to fully colonize, very dense amounts of mycelium. Also very cheapest of the grains tested to buy. Picked up at the local Asian market for about $.50 per lb. The winner in this particular trial.

Quiona- Dense/Strong mycelium formed VERY quickly on the outside of the dough-like lump. But because it clumps not a good candidate for spawning.

Here are a few pictures of the fruits. 4-5 flushes of very dense beauties. Averaged wet weight 30-50g each. Unsure of the final total dry weight.

Man let me tell ya. That KSSS strain is a top yielder in my book. I've had casings of them around that same weight with wbs. Some 2.5 oz's dry on the average. Nice work man!

I bought a big bag of mung beans yesterday. I'm gonna do 3 or so jars of them and case them, see what happens. Whenever I do i'll post.

Any other substrates worth trying? I am trying out ready canned food which I can just microwave to sterilize once I put them in jars. I rinse off the salt, boil up and rinse again. My sweetcorn showed signs of growth but now seems too wet, it now has a large filter so it may dry a bit.

I am trying red kidney beans and processed peas. These are all the cheapest things I could find. I tried canned lentils which looked promising but then stalled, went a bit mushy. Cheap canned food is actually cheaper to me than buying millet grain from the health shop, and I do not have to travel far.

Would carrots work? they have jars of mixxed veg too. I think most canned stuff has to be microwaved to drive off excess moisture, knowing how much to drive off is the hard part.
