Have you ever been tempted to cook up a small batch? I can't stop myself from collecting a few every time they are encountered just for the smell -- they are extremely common in our deciduous forests. This summer, conventional wisdom be damned, Imma ah gunna fry some up.

The fungus fair looks to have been a rousing success. BTW Alan, nice fingernails, you did a nice job... my favorite color.

I have seen that Russula listed as poisonous, but I'd try it too.
I am not going to tell the story about David Arora cooking ALL the Russulas again, search on my username for Arora if you haven't heard it yet.
If you get sick then we will know that this is one of the Russula species you need to parboil. : )

Haahaa... boiling the rare mushrooms when the prospective identifier is out of the room Sounds like the sadist curing the masochist.
I'm pretty cavalier about eating things from the Russulaceae anyway and rely solely upon flavor. Although I have never tried one of the staining species -- I think it was Russula densifolia that popped up several times last autumn.... i would have to go through my notes to be sure... nevertheless, I didn't feel moved to cook them.

Well if you look at the photos in that MO link you'll notice that the mushroom was in a rather advanced stage of rotting... I have since not encountered one of the same species with an equally enticing scent. But I guess I'll wait for your report.

I saw the MO link and yeah, it did look a little old but that thing was HUGE!!!!
How about almond paste marzipan shaped like little mushrooms with bits of candied R. fragrantissima inside?

Believe it or not, I didn't save any of those for my herbarium but this post got me to thinking. Why couldn't I dry them and use them for potpourri?
