What do you think of this idea??
    #961788 - 10/15/02 02:15 AM (14 years, 9 months ago)

I ran out of vermiculite and had a ton of brown rice flour when i was done filling every jar i had with pf tek BRF substrate. I looked all around for something to use as a moisture/cake conditioner but there was nothing... then i saw a sponge. I cut it into relatively small pieces and mixed with BRF and water until the sponge bits were saturated with BRF/Water mix. Then i added a little more BRF to dry it out a bit. I stuck it all into a pint glass (ran out of jars) and substituted the vermiculite protection layer with a spherical, fine grain chemical fertilizer layer (potash, nitrogen). I sealed the top with a double layer of saran wrap, topped off with tin foil and an elastic band around the whole cover. Sterilized by boiling for an hour and innoculated through the saran wrap, then replaced tin foil and elastic band seal.

My question is this... what do you think my chances of actual colonization are? If it does colonize i know it'll take a while since it's a full pint. Do you think it's a viable idea? The jar is sitting with the rest of my colonizing crop in an incubator with 80 rh, and an average temp of 83-85F. The strain is Tapalpa (i didn't find any info on this strain so i'm using the Ecuadorian temp settings since that's what most of my colonizing crop is).

It all sounds fine except for that fertilizer which would completely fuck everything up, I will be incredibly surprised if your spores even germinate.

Why the fertilizer? It's pretty dry and unlikely to dissolve into the cake.. i think hehe. One of the things i liked about using the fert was that it settled more tightly due to it's uniform grain shape so i thought contams would have a harder time getting in. If it doesn't dissolve, will it still mess up the cake?

Giving spores that you want to germinate - chemical fertilizer -- is about like giving a child an ounce of crack. They overamp & die, most often. 6T
