"I said about five 'Hail Mary's as we were crash landing."

Do you think that helped the plane land relatively safely? Miracle or astute pilot?

Obviously, prayer didn't help land the plane; but I'd be willing to bet that it did help calm that specific passenger.

Did those prayers hurt the passengers, the pilot, or the crew?

Doesn't God kill a kitten every time he is disturbed from his afternoon nap? Not sure about Mary though...

I no longer think of prayer in a petitionary sense.  I think of it more like a mantra.  It helps induce peace of mind, puts us in touch with our divine nature, and helps us integrate the archetypal nature of that to which we pray.

Those Hail Marys may not have had any role in saving that man from death, but it may have helped put his mind at peace.

I dunno, but somebody put those birds in the flight path. I am guessing someone on board had dome some serious sinning.

One could answer within the confines of their own bias or attempt to understand a spiritual (read immaterial) connection via materialist means.  Neither type of answer would yield a satisfactory answer.  The first instance is obvious; in the second there are too many variables to consider besides the fact that one cannot use materialist assumptions to query matters outside their purview.

Perhaps as a case study we could crash a series of airplanes with passengers murmuring Hail Mary's in one set and passengers shouting Heil Hitler in the other.

Just a thought.

Good suggestion. Now all we need are some planes and volunteers. *digs through storage chest* Thought I had some old swastikas in here somewhere...

If a religious person had some substantial degree of faith, then one Hail Mary should suffice. Why the need to repeat?

If a religious person had great faith, they would not be afraid nor attempt to influence the outcome at all as God already knows best.

Sounds humorous, but if the Heil's had greater survivors, the Church would just spin it.

There was a disaster years ago and the nearby Baptist Bible College at Tacoa Falls in Georgia representative said it was retribution for sinning. A few years later a damn burst at the falls flooding the campus. Several teachers and a few dozen student were drowned. It was a test of faith. Whatever...

I know of this because my niece went to this college for four years and graduated with honors. What career-enhancing skillset did she have when finished? Absolutely nothing. Got her a job as a Denny's waitress, and now she will spend several more years in a real college getting a nursing degree.

if you can get a job out of what you learned, that counts for something.  if not, you have a point.

I am going to guess that you have some real-world skills. Being to read and interpret Biblical parables is only useful if you stay within the narrow confines of your church.

Perhaps, but consider the fact that Lot attempted to bargain with God over Sodom.  Obviously Lot was just other meddlesome Jew who thought he knew better than God.  Oh, the temerity.  His wife ended up as a condiment.

astute pilot, but also a very huge portion of 'luck' (that there hadn't been ferries on that part of the river for example)
