Windows 7 Beta

Anyone else signing up?

I just got my key and downloaded the ISO, it was super easy. I thought I was going to have to jump through more hoops than that.

What program did you use to mount the ISO?

I've downloaded the official beta twice.  Each time i have mounted using Roxio, and each time I've got installation errors.

Didn't you do your fresh install directly from the DVD?  (e.g. boot to CD, delete/format existing partitions and start from scratch?)

Thats what I tried, but during the install, I get keep getting errors.  I just assumed its a problem mounting the ISO.

General "installation errors" claiming that a file is missing.

Windows 7 is my permanent OS now. I also installed it on my girlfriend's laptop, replacing Vista (not even dual-booting). It's awesome! :cheer:

So I finally mounted with an old NERO program and got it installed.

I like it, although I haven't used it quite to enough to figure out whats what.  Right now, the only major annoyance is the start menu.  Hitting start--> programs brings up a smaller program list, which has a scroll bar.  I wish it would just be a longer, vertical list.  Also, some of the things there are the program folders, not the programs themselves.

Thus, I have to hit Start---> programs, (scroll down the list), open the program folder, then open the program.  Thats a bit much IMO, but I'm sure I can add and tweak things.

Yeah, it's a bit annoying, though essentially all they've done is made the old hover-to-open thing into a click-to-open. I prefer it the old way, but I don't use the start menu much.

BTW, that was introduced with Vista, not Windows 7.

I installed it on my work laptop. I can't get any software to run, so I'm not to happy with it. I mean, I know it's a beta and all, but it's irritating.

Fuck winows 7. I upgraded to XP from Vista. My computer is a fucking workhorse and it can barely  handle Vista it's pathetic.

Did you know winows has never been written over. The code they used for DOS is the code they have built on for years and years and years.

You won't get the with Linux.

If you want something that works and can be fixed not just nig-rigged...

Check out PClinux, ubuntu for new users, opensuse is fairly easy, MYTHbuntu...Those are some nice ones.

If your computer can't handle Vista its not a work horse, its an old computer that used to be a work horse...Stick with Linux. Nothing in windows is "nig-rigged" its repaired in the form of a patch, just like linux's Kernel updates.

I didn't I just said Microsoft sucks ass...

And yes I understand what mythbuntu is for I turned my old pentium 4 Dell in to a DVR machine. I was listing flavors that I like. I never said what they are best for.

Are you aware that Mythbuntu is a cross between MythTV which is the OS which would run your media side, and Ubuntu which could do whatever else you wanted to.

So I could turn my laptop in to a portable DVR with the workability of ubuntu.

Vista ran flawlessly on my AMD 3500+ with 1 gig of ram.

And the case has no effect on how it runs.

I mean, this is my old computer that has 500mhz and 256mb of ram

If you must have them: The only computer I ever ran it on was my laptop when I first got it around 1 year ago. Aside from that I build mine and would never intentionally put it on anything.

Dell Inspiron
Intel Centrino Duo 2 ghz
4 GB RAM
Nvidia 8600 gts
Hitachi 160 GB HD

I mean that's really all you need to know that would affect speed at all. I just really hated it. It wasn't speed so much I guess I could have said that, but the change...I don't like trying to integrate Vista with my Linux file sharing system...I didn't like that linux could read the files in XP but it couldn't read the file system for vista.

I could go on but I just really will never install anything other than XP until they get this shit right.

I manage computer networks too and since the computers at the office are XP pro I found it best to go ahead and run it as well.

However I did like how if your hardware drivers failed Vista recovered almost 100 percent of the time...XP doesn't. Aside from that I hate it.

I'm thinking about it. If you all remember Win 2000...XP is win 2000 with a new interface and less bugs. Hopefully that is what they did here.

I'll see what everyone says first.

Yeah I skipped 2k and went to XP. Now I've skipped Vista (used it for a month) and use 7 permanently. It's awesome.

7's pretty sweet...I'm diggin' it...I've installed all the programs and drivers I've been running on Vista without a hiccup, even the UAC is easier to turn off. I like the networking layout better too, it doesn't seem as convoluted. Maybe because I've already learned Vista...

I'm running Vista on a Thinkpad with a 2.2.g dual core cpu, a low end Intel onboard vid card, and 3g's of ram and it's completely fine. It's faster than XP on boot up and shut down; and it recovers from hangs way faster.

My desktop is running 7 with 3 gigs of ram and a slightly slower cpu and it's really fast. Although I do have a better video card in it.

I think a large majority of Vista haters are just on a bandwagon talkin shit when they, 1. either don't now what the hell there talkin about and just want to sound like they do, or 2. they have never really used it, again just want to sound like they know what what there talkin about.

I'd rather have a Windows machine, because the home and end keys "just work". The right mouse button "just works" (firing on press is not adequate). Maximizing windows "just works". And I can make each window appear in the taskbar regardless of whether it's minimized or not. The taskbar "just works", the Dock does not.

I use a Mac all day at work and, while I don't hate it, I'm now more convinced than ever that the Windows interface is superior.

You can do even better and promote freedom by using linux. Linux is the future. Apple promotes secrecy and closing off code, these are not revolutionary concepts. plus now that apple got lazy and went to intel hardware a mac has the same components as a PC but costs far more. the revolutionary step would be to support freedom and use linux, you can customize it all you want and its even more stable than a mac believe it or not. plus Apple is very super corporate, back in the day it was the hippis thing but not all the LSD eaters follow freedom too linux.

Awesome, huh?

heard of macs, but prefer linux for this, works great, even better than my wifes macbook.

Of the 5 computers I run at home, I'm proud to say only 1 has windows on it.

1 windows xp (my daughters)
1 archlinux (my computer, main desktop, runs printserver for all others)
1 Mac OS X (macbook pro, my wifes)
1 Linspire linux (my acer netbook)
1 freeBSD w/ freeNAS

peace

Did you know you can have a computer that just works,

Maximizing windows "just works".

haha, that is the one thing that pisses me off about OSX...i cannot stand clicking the (+) button on windows, only to have the window get bigger, but not fill the screen...having to drag a window to get it fullscreen is lame.
