Hydrated lime soak for wheat straw?
    #959233 - 10/14/02 06:30 AM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Has anyone ever tried this? seems like it could be a time saver when pasturizing
straw.

I don;t really think that would be neccesary, unless your PH is way off. But I could be wrong, I am not too sure what a hydrated lime soak is used for.

It's used for chemical pastuerization.

yeah,I read about it in the peroxide manuals and was wondering if it would rid the straw of contams or not,or if anyone has tried it and their results.it sounds really good not having to use a hot water bath, seeing how you could pasturize a quarter
bail in one shot in a large trashcan or something of the sort.

even if it's not effective, it couldn't hurt to hedge your bets against contams. unless ofcourse you're ph gets too far off and the mycelium gets burned.

Try a search for pasteurizing straw with bleach.

Thanks starspawn,The bleach tek sounds a little more safe than the hydrated lime
probably a little faster also.,did you have any problems with contams at all when you did this?

As long as you use enough spawn the straw will be fine. The H2O2+lime tek states that the straw becomes stronger against contamination. The best way is to get the spawn to colonize fast so contamination does'nt have a chance. After the straw is chopped up(i use a weed wacker in a rubbermaid while someone holds the lid down)i put the straw in a pillow case, then dunk it in plain water.Squeeze it so it's not dripping to much, then put in a plastic bag and freeze over night. When water freezes it expands,so all the cells in the straw will be exploded.Next, just follow the bleach tek, the mycelium will eat through the straw very fast. When you start your spawn run make sure to use a lot of spawn. At first i tried to use as little as i could, but no matter what i did it would contaminate. As soon as i started putting more spawn everything started to work right.Oh don't forget that straw needs air.I put a pipe over the end of the bag, pull it to the straw and fold the bag around the pipe.Take some polyfil and stuff it in the pipe.Pull the pipe up above the straw about an inch.Cut the bag so it hangs down the top of the pipe and tape the bag to and around the pipe. When you look down the pipe you should see the polyfil, make sure its not hanging past the bottom of the pipe. Now all the air can be squeezed in and out like a bellows.

Sounds like a good idea. Thanks for sharing.

Sounds Viable Mickey but what about the fact that the cell walls might get broken down to a point where they actually become useless and the fibre becomes a mush??
Might not necessarily be a problem but something to take into account?

As much as i would like to take credit for freezing straw i have to admit i stole the "tek" from Nomis Cub Method. It's on the grow/find of this website. When i first started all i could find was haycob at the pet store. That shit is the worst, but i learned about bleach pasteurizing and the freezing method from endless contamination. Not that i would ever use that shit again but i could if i had to.Oh ya it never turns to mush, not for me anyway.
