My Mini-Monotub Project /w Pics

I'm building a variety of different monotubs to test out to see how well they work and if they're any appreciable difference between them. That and just to see which ones I prefer.
Starting small and working my way up. I'm looking for low maintenance, simplicity type setups. The less complicated the better.
For my first project I'll be making a mini-monotub. Using a 3 Gallon Rubbermaid Tote.
Dimensions are: 9x13x7 (note, this is the inside dimensions, the labeled dimensions seem to include the handles, lips etc.)
For the first use I'll be using 3 inches of substrate (6 quarts) and 1 inch of casing (2 quarts).
Substrate will be WBS -> Coir/Vermiculite/Coffee/Gypsum Casing will be 50/50+
Here's the pics ->

2 air holes on each side, approximately 1 inch across stuffed loosely with polyfill. Each hole is centered on the 5.5 inch mark from the bottom so as to be 1 inch above the casing.
Cut out a hole in the center and replaced with a clear acrylic panel (1.28 at lowes)
I've read alot of reports of people having trouble dunking bulk substrates so all my tubs will have a drainage hole /w rubber stopper to use while dunking without having to remove the mycelium.
I forsee a potential problem not having enough room for the mushies to grow (3-4 inch clearance). If it becomes an issue I can reduce the substrate levels some for the 2nd test.
I finished my medium sized tub this morning.

That's an 18 gallon rubbermaid. Dimensions: 18x12x16.5 Funny, the advertised Dimensions are 23.9x15.9x16.5
Same modifications, except extra air holes and each air hole centered at 9 inches. (6 inches for sub, 2 for casing)
According to the spawn ratio calculator it'll take 22 quarts of substrate to fill to 6 inches.
So here's my recipe to fill both tubs at once.
16 Quarts Coco Coir (2 bricks) 2 Quarts Coffee 2 Quarts Vermiculite 8 Quarts WBS/Rye Spawn 2 Quarts Gypsum
Should be just enough to fill both properly with a little left over just incase.

that drain sounds like a good idea, pretty simple too. i might try that with my next monotub. the one i'm doing now is 12x18x12 on the inside, so even with a 4" sub depth, there's 8" of growing room.
i also went for opaque tubs and cut a hole in the lid, but i used saran wrap actually. it doesn't sound secure at all but it is as long as you don't poke it with anything sharp. A couple layers, each sealed to what's left of the top with gorilla tape make for a solid seal
I'm interested to see how this mini-tub of yours turns out along with the other sizes you're trying

I like those tubs.. I'm getting something that exact size, but 2 of them and making a dub-tub.. I dunno what it is exactly, but they are truly set it and forget it..

I'll probably take this recipe and try to scale it down -> 8 Quarts Coco Coir (one brick) 1 Quart used Coffee Grounds 1 Quart Vermiculite 1 Quart Gypsum
Those little acrylic panels were like $1.28 at lowes.

A friend of mine gave me a handful of these little plastic vents to try with my monotub project. I have no clue what these are called, they're kinda like soffit vents but smaller. If someone knows the 'official' name lemme know!
They fit into a 1" diameter hole. So I went and bought a 1" circular drill bit from home depot.

I have no idea if this will be too much ventilation or not. The space between the slats is pretty small and I could always stuff a chunk of polyfill inside the vent if it isn't.
I'll post the results in a few weeks. Polyfill vs Plastic Vents.

the vents seem like a pretty nifty idea. give it a shot just keep an eye on your humidity.
oh and with the drain. i also have two drain holes in the corners of my mono's. one thing your going to need are some plugs (rubber or cork) for when you dunk your monotub.
good luck my friend..

They'll be cased and should provide their own humidity. From what I've read optimal humidity inside the tub is around 80% (with a casing). I'm gonna use a humidifier in the room to keep it comfortable, as it gets dry as fuck in the winter here, so it shouldn't dry out unless the vents provide too much fae. In which case I'll modify it by stuffing some polyfill in there (on the inside). I think the monotub looks much more.... professional like this, plus it's super easy. Took me about a minute to install those vents.

you might want to hot glue a tyvek disk into tha plastic air vent. i mean what is a plastic air vent anyway?

Just recently Ive been reading about drain holes in monotubs. I was thinking of putting 1 on the side in the middle of my monotubs to drain water after dunking. I realized this would be harder to drain all the water, so the should be place in the corners. I have some of thoes self healing ports that agar uses on his LC lids. They are awesome little stoppers, and they seal TIGHT.

Tyvek would only provide gas exchange, this needs to be fresh air exchange - but still limited in quantity. I'll do a side by side test of polyfill vs plastic vents.

This tub is on it's 4th flush and still going strong. I'm gonna say that the vents are successful.

I never used any sort of polyfill/tape over these and it's done fine.

I was worried that the fruits would get too big and push the lid off but they grow to JUST the right height and stop. Nothing amazing yield wise, but not bad either, especially for the effort/time involved. Probably around 14 grams dry per flush so far and all my mini tubs have been pretty consistent in that regard.
This one had a bunch of side pins, but nice big ones though.

I try to discourage that, because I don't like having to take the whole cake out to get at the ones that grew under it.

but it's not that big of a deal.
