First cakes and no love, help
    #9595552 - 01/12/09 05:23 PM (12 years, 1 month ago)

Please help. I have used the pf method for my first try and have managed to colonize 12 jars with beautiful mycelium. I used a Rubbermaid tub with a windowed top and perlite base and use a 17 watt compact florescent for small amounts of time per day.
My humidity is staying at 100% and the temp bounces from 69 to 78 at different times a day.
I birthed 2 cakes and left for the holidays, of coarse, came back to nothing but contaminants.
So I cleaned the chamber thoroughly and used new perlite and birthed 4 more cakes. I didnt notice at first but one cake already had 3 primordia showing at birth so they fruited immediately.
And thats it, the other 3 cakes are fluffy and white but no primoria or anything in 10 days. Im afraid to birth the rest of my cakes because Im convinced something isnt right. help please. How do I encourage pinning or stop doing something wrong. Thanks.
P.S. Ill post pics later today.

Yea pics should help.

How much light are u giving it?

Ur container does have holes to allow a little FAE right?  Or are u fanning/misting?

I'm giving it about 8 to 12 hours of light from a 17 watt compact florescent per day. Oh, and the are b+ and z strain.
I didn't put holes in the container because I was worried about contams so I fan the air 2 or 3 times a day. And I haven't misted at all, I didn't think I needed to because of the high humidity. Ill start right now though if that will help. Pictures are coming right up.
Thanks by the way.

Heres the pics. 1 is the chamber, another is the jars that are about 3 weeks old, maybe even 4 weeks. and the rest are the cakes. Birthed about 11 days ago.

First that hygrometer probably isnt acurate.

Fresh air exchange is a really important pinning trigger. 2-3 times a day is not enough air exchange, even with a shotgun fruiting chamber its recomended to fan 4-5 times daily. Also frequent air exchange will help keep contaminants at bay. Contaminants thrive in still stale air, while mycelium suffers. co2 build up can even stunt growth of fruitbodys and abort them.

Id suggest drilling holes in all 6 sides just like in the tek, and mist then fan 4-5 times daily.

Leaving your fruiting chamber with no air exchange is probably what caused contamination, either than or the cakes were already contaminated.

Dont worry about contamination during fruiting. Keep up FAE, and aslong as your cakes are not contaminated while colinising they shouldnt contaminat during fruiting (not until a good few flushes)

yeah, link is in my signiture. its also in the pf tek videos at

www.mushroomvideos.com

the holes not only provide air exchange, but also help with humidity. FAE is really important, more so than humidity, which can be made up for with misting

You guys rock. Ill do that right now and update later. Can I mist right into the chamber or do I have to set up a shield to mist onto so water doesnt settle on the cakes?

No need for a sheild. Mist well above your terrarium allowing a fine mist to fall inside, then fan afterwords. Fanning afterwords will help dry any large droplets of water that may have formed.

Cakes like moisture, some people even soak there cakes. I used to mist my cakes directly from about 6 feet.
