non-germination of spores?
    #958553 - 10/14/02 01:19 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Experimenting with growing for the first time, I inoculated several jars (B+ and Mazatapec, from TLG) nearly four days ago and there isn't a hint of mycelium on the cakes. It has been a bit chilly in the house owing to the time of year, the thermometer reading 68-9 in the day and possibly sinking as low as 65 in the wee hours of the morning. I was given to understand by the PF Tek that low temperatures were not a huge problem, but I have procured a clamping light with reflector and positioned it a couple of feet above the jars.

So, my questions are, will this light be enough, should I leave it on all the time, and at what point do I get worried about the lack of mycelium?

At those temps you can expect to wait over a week! Kill the light untill your cakes are fully colonized.

Even at the correct incubation temperature 4 days would be very fast. You really need to build some sort of incubator or else you're going to be waiting a looong time. And yeah.. they need darkness during colonisation.

Is the light bulb still suitable for a heat source if I wrap the jars in something opaque so that the actual light doesn't penetrate?

Sure, a light bulb should work, if you can get the temperature right.
I (and a lot of other people) use a bin full of water with an aquarium heater in it, then a smaller bin sitting inside it (surrounded by water)... blah, read about it here.

Yeah, build an incubator, there cheap, easy, and really beneficial. Hope this isn't the same as Zeta's link, but try here as well,

I think all the supplies come to about $15, give or take a couple of bucks. Well worth it IMO.

You could try the "Box the jars came in along with a strong light Tek" for incubation. I did this and it worked really well. 2 weeks to full 100% colonization. 3 days before I saw growth. It worked.

Peace

Everybody, please ignore LSAuser. He has never grown a single shroom in his life but loves to pretend to be an expert even though he has no idea what he is talking about.

I've actually already got everything I need for an incubator. The terrarium that I'm using, in fact, is a 20 gallon aquarium that I already had around, used to keep fish in it (yes, I cleaned it thoroughly).

Right now the jars are up in my closet in the box the jars came in with a black sweatshirt draped over them. I think I will set up an incubator today anyway, as I do not think that light is getting the job done. After waking up this morning I think 65 may have been generous - due to thermal or airflow mechanics that I do not understand, my room is always the coldest place in the house.

Just replying to say that I set up the incubator and there is already some mycelium less than three and a half hours later. Temperature inside the incubator is hovering at about 78 degrees, and the incubator tek I used was a little unorthodox but works well, will post pictures and description when I get some time later.
