if it in fact rotting, just cut the bad part off,and re root the rest.Make sure you cut a lil ways up from the rot,so you leave no rot on the plant.

Do me a favor, and kinda give the brown area a squeeze. If it's mushy, then it's rotten, and will eventually travel up the whole plant, and kill it.I'd cut all that rot off asap!

Not sure how it got like that man,but I had a Bridgesii cutting that I just stuck in a pot of dry soil, and after a couple of weeks did the same thing as yours.I never did water it either,so i don't know why it rotted.Luckily I caught it in time, and saved the rest of the plant:grin:

bruising alone can fuck up a cactus.
But how dry was the soil??  Totally bone dry???
How calloused was the end???  The ends can still put out moisture and then rot.  I never stick cuttings in soil no matter how dry anymore.

Yep,that Bridgesii that that happened to was one I got from cpw my good buddy, and he warned me not to put it in the soil, but to let it root first.I'll be listening to what other people say from now on:grin:

I root my cacti using aquarium rocks.I just get a pot,or a container, stick the Cactus down in the pot,and fill it up all around the cacti with aquarium rocks, about a couple inches up the cacti to keep it stabilized. It works every time:grin:

I'm going to try that aquarium rocks thing with my small 5cm san pedro cutting, hopefully it will work

too late, just cut the rot off before it spreads further.
is it just me of does that soil totally not look dry?

Why is it so hard for people to refrain from watering their cuttings?

And it's January.

take the other 9 out of the wet soil if they have no roots yet.
and almost three weeks after, will not be enough time to water in a lot of cases.

lesson learned, DON'T water untill the cutting has a decent amount of roots.

yeah, what do you think an unrooted cactus cutting can do with water?

the answer is nothing, because it has no roots.
don't give them any water until you are 100% positive that they have started to throw roots.

just let them sit dry, then dig them up and check for roots every couple of months.
