I was wondering if someone can tell me which yields more small grain containers or large ones? I read that if you cut up a BRF cake in half that it yields more fruit is that true with rye grain?

The idea of cutting up a cake is to increase surface area. Grains are spawned to bulk substrates (as they don't fruit alone) this process makes the area much larger (3:1 ratio = 4x the area), so grains will produce more than cakes almost always.
That said, cakes are easier and usually more contam resistant.

It depends on many factors. What type of fruiting chamber you have, depth of container, and amount of grain can all have a significant impact on yields. You're best bet is to spawn your grain to a nutrient rich substrate such as horse poo or coir though...
