Shiitake fruiting invitro

I recently made a trade with a member for some cultures and among them was a large jar of shiitake on sawdust. Ive never grown this species (succesfully) and Im wondering what my options are for fruiting these. There are several large knots forming inside of the jar. I originally planned on transferring bits of the sawdust to other jars to colonize more sawdust but it looks like my sawdust source is being unresponsive and the mushrooms are not. Any tips as to how I can get the biggest yield possible out of this jar would be appreciated.

Ive seen his videos(the parts freely available on the internet), and Ive experienced no difficulty with cubes, the pf tek, etc.
Im just wondering about possible uses of the colonized sawdust, and if my only choice is to fruit as-is.

I guess what mycoharry is trying to say is that Shiitake are not grown in jars, you have to do bags. This jar you have can be used to inoculate a couple of bags.

Okay, thats what I was wanting to know. Ill just fill the bags with brf and sawdust then.

Yes, and keep BRF down to no more then 15% by weight, Shiitake can form weird fruit when there is too much starch.

So, Denger...your saying that you can replace bran for BRF in a pinch then...but avoid more then 15% because of the starch content.

I am saying you can replace bran with almost any grain product milled medium-fine (including BRF, but its more $$ then WBS or bran), and with any grain product you should avoid putting in more then 15% (10% recommended) for shiitake's.

Flour (unless its a whole grain flour) is not a good choice because it lacks the outer layers of the seeds, which contain most of the nitrogen. However, any whole grain product would work.

So, then one must ask...is Bran necessarily the best nutrient additive then? I know Stamets always has mentioned Bran as the fundamental additive to sawdust blocks and eaters, but as you've mentioned medium grind grains suffice, but do they stand up to Bran?

That depends. GGMM has a huge table at the end with the analysis of various possible supplements. There are a number of things that seem fairly close. I have personally substituted bran with coarsely ground WBS with excellent results.

Yes, WBS "flour" (coarse grind) is fine for supplementing sawdust for use with L. edodes. This bag is ~ 1 week out since inoculation with grain.

Those are nice fruits for a jar grow. I'd recommend placing the jars on their side on top of a something to elevate them above the perlite next time. This will allow a much more natural growth environment and will make it possible to harvest them much more easily (*fill the jars to the brim next time to get the fruits as close to the edge as possible).
Or just use bags.

Hericium grows pretty thick and sticky mycelium on the surface, no wonder you could not get them out. You'd get the same thing with normal sawdust+bran mixture: its the species not the mix that caused that. Good grow, BTW. These are super tasty!
