Substitute Coco Fiber (not coir!) for Wheat straw?
    #9570227 -

Hi, After trying the PF cakes (which are beginning to show knots I believe!), I've decided to make a trial monotub in order to attempt to see a bulk grow in action, and keep my head supplied for a decent amount of time.

I'm unable to get coco-coir, but am able to get Black Cow manure at the local Lowes, and I have some vermiculite to loosen it up, however, I've read that it's much better to use straw, in order to keep it light and somewhat airy.

When I checked Petsmart for coco-coir, I found quickly that all they offered was coco-fiber, which I've read isn't nearly the same thing and won't work for my purposes.

My idea was to mix the Black Cow manure with coco fiber, possibly add some verm. and spawn with some WBS, and was wondering if anyone thinks that the coco fiber would act as a suitable substitute for wheat straw, or should I just stick with manure + vermiculite?

Has anyone tried this and perhaps I just missed the post while searching?

A pre-emptive thanks for any help you can offer!

Oh, I forgot to mention that I can't seem to find any Wheat Straw either, I'm actually looking at Bermuda Hay right this minute from my window, but I've heard bad things about contams with it.

check petsmart again.  they have coco coir.    bed-a-beast brand.  $4.99 a brick.  also, both lowes and home depot sell straw.  they have it in 18 wheelers.

yes the fibers will work.  ive used it several times before, i was able to find coir. at petsmart, its in the reptile section, beside the sand. the fibers work, even though they take a lil longer to colonize. and when their picked they tend to bring up a good deal of fibers with them. if you cant find a package at petsmart that says bed a beast look for something called tropical soil by all things living, its the petsamrt brand of coir, it works great too.

Not all petsmarts have coir bricks.  My local petsmart definitely didn't have it when I went there.  I checked everywhere and asked like 3 different people.

I ended up having to go to a small privately owned pet shop to get coir.

I actually looked specifically for the Bed-A-Beast brand, but for whatever reason it isn't carried where I'm at, and the only coco-anything products available are all "fiber" but none are coir.

Unless I'm mistaken.....should coir look similar to shredded cypress mulch? (vague resemblance.)

As for the straw, the only bales I've seen (though I'll check again) were for pine straw, and not wheat.

I think it must be a regional thing.

That's what I thought. My petsmart only carries the fibers. But you say they will work, but only take longer? Any idea how they'd work when mixed with cow manure?

I'm just taking a shot at the dark here hoping for somebody who may have tried this particular bulk method, or maybe knows more about how they would interact before I devote myself to this try.

Negative.

I think I'll just take the 2 pint jars I have colonized now, maybe use one to begin colonizing more jars, and use the other as an experimental bulk grow, spawning to cow manure/coco-fiber/vermiculite, and casing with Miracle Grow Moisture Control, since these are the things I know for certain I can find.

Any ideas/opinions/comments/suggestions on this from anyone?

Lowes and Home Depo has Wheat and Rye straw. One bail is like $5.00. It has some seed heads tho.

Negative, while I've seen it there during the spring, for sewing grass seed, I can't seem to get it from either place at the moment, I think it must be seasonal.

This works just fine.  Only drawback is when you pick your fruits, large chunks come up and you're left with small craters in the substrate.  Other than that.... I like it.

Now that I think about it, I've never bought a brick of coir that said it was coir!  It always said compressed coconut fiber!  You're probably passing up the product because it doesn't say "COIR".
