Can I get an ID please?
    #954923 - 10/12/02 12:09 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

I'm sorry, but I do not have a digital camera.... I will use Anno's identification method.

a. Habitat: These were found in a cow pasture at the foot of the Black Hills in South    Dakota. They were on just about every cow pie in the whole field.
b. The gills are black, not attached to the stem
c. The average measurements are: Cap-1/2"  Stem-1 1/2"
d. The stems are dark to light brown, skinny, smooth, too small to tell if they are hollow
e. The caps are dark to light brown with some being reddish or gray, conical; bell like(some with nipples)
f. The spore print color is pitch black
g. I cannot identify a bruising reaction. The stem just seems to get a little darker when  cut
h. The mushrooms smell very earthy; like soil or mulch

    I am sorry this data is vague, but any help is very much appreciated. I am guessing that these are some type of panaleous species, I'm just unsure of which one.
:confused:

As a guess, Panaeolus papilionaceus.

Happy mushrooming.

A good guess, but I'm not sure. Panaeolus papilionaceus' caps aren't quite as conical as these. Also, does Pan. papilionaceus grow on cow dung?

yes, paps grow on dung.
papilionaceus is a variable ass mushroom.
look at pics online.
i am always startled that people dont see more pics online.
i go to dogpile and search for the species or genus i want and bingo. lots of links and lots of pics. easy, try it.
peace.

Well, I've checked pictures of panaeolus papilionaceus, and it is not what I'm looking for. I looked through 3 mushroom field guides and have come up with no match. Is it possible that I've found a new type of mushroom?

It's possible but very unlikely. Try doing a Google search on Panaeolus and looking at the photos and seeing if you find something that looks like your mushrooms. I often find photos at some of the good sites that look very different from the specimens in any of my field guides. In general, you should find a written description and compare your mushrooms to it. If it agrees then you have the right mushroom. Photos can be very unreliable.

Good advice again, toxicman. But I went through google and typed in the following types:

*Panaeolus acuminatus
* Panaeolus antillarum
* Panaeolus ater
* Panaeolus benanosis
* Panaeolus cambodginiensis
* Panaeolus campanulatus
* Panaeolus chlorocystis
* Panaeolus foeniscii
* Panaeolus firmicola
* Panaeolus olivaceus
* Panaeolus papilionaceus
* Panaeolus phalanarum
* Panaeolus retirugis
* Panaeolus rickenii
* Panaeolus separatus
* Panaeolus solidipes
* Panaeolus sphinctrinus
* Panaeolus subbalteatus
* Panaeolus tropicalis
* Panaeolus venenosus
STILL no match.........
