Is someone in control of my computer?

My computer has been known for coming on when I have it on "Stand by" at randon times. But tonight I put it on SB and it came on three times in about 10 minutes. It wouldn't stay off.
Is it possible that someone is using my computer in some way and is turning it back on so they can use it?

Somebody who fixed this computer about three years ago told me that someone had been using my computer for bandwidth or some shit. I think it may be happening again. How can my computer keep coming back on over and over for no reason?

Some of your hardware might be playing up. Maybe the power supply.

What did you mean when you say that the power supply or the hardware might be "playing up" though?

Computers can act by themselves sometimes, and unless your seeing anything bad happen to your computer (Slower computer / Internet / Potential Virus) Then I really wouldn't worry about it. Just turn off your computer instead of stand by. Sorry I can't be much of advice, not a computer expert..
But to be off topic: You seem like an older member, if you don't mind may I ask of your age?

I would guess its much more likely some piece of rogue hardware is bringing it out of sleep, like the power supply suggested above. I had it happen with a low quality mouse that wandered a bit and a mobo that would boot from USB.

Yeah, I have some sort of issue. I have windows popping up here and there and other weird stuff. I think it's from me downloading torrents.
I'm 30 years old.

Yeah, who knows. I was just hoping that I don't have a mischievous ghost in my apartment.

I assume you dont know if your motherboard's BIOS has an option to bring computer out of sleep with USB? That would be the first thing I would check. Then turning individual things off over time and seeing if it stays asleep (like unplug the internet, or a printer.. that may be a long shot)

Yeah, I don't know anything about that stuff. Please don't try and tell me though. I don't want to try and fix anything on my own.

I'm guessing that maybe wake-on-LAN got turned on somehow.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wake-on-LAN
Quote:
Wake on LAN (WOL, sometimes WoL) is an Ethernet computer networking standard that allows a computer to be turned on or woken up remotely by a network message.
Try unplugging the ethernet cable (I'm assuming you're not using wireless) and see if it still happens.

It is possible that someone is in control of your computer with some sort of powerful trojan.
Have you done all appropriate virus scans? Some AVG and some Malwarebytes?

Go into BIOS and turn off "Wake On LAN."
