i was getting hat problem with some big orissas i was growing. then for a cycle i left the light on the whole ime and it quit. i think it is from a big mushy trying to change directions while growing, but this isjust MHO.

Probably verticillium.
Do the stems have any brown on them?
Does the cap have a fuzz on it?

I agree with Dream, probably Verticillium. That would account for the stem swelling/cracking (I bet they're hollow too). You probably wouldn't notice any brown spots or downy mildew unless you had extremely humid conditions. Another reason to suspect the presence of Verticillium is that caps become plane (flatten out) at an early age.
