Armillaria ponderosa

I read in a thread here recently, that these could not be cultivated indoors. Because they needed hosts. I read on rogersmushrooms, that it also grows on the ground. What are the facts???? And is there a large market, ie. restaurants, who want this mushroom??

I dont think you will find a lot of restaurants who will be interested in Armillaria. Not a lot of people know about it. It could be marketed as a "wild mushroom" which will be misleading if it is grown indoors, but hey, most of marketing is misleading.

The reason I am asking, is that I plan on writing up a buisnees plan, for growing gourmet mushrooms, and selling them for a great deal cheaper to local restaraunts. Hopefully branching out further it this works as well as I hope.. Any suggestions on some gourmet mushies to choose?? Not worried about the difficulty, cause I tend to follow instructions well. J

I think you'd be more successful with Lions mane if you call it a "lobster mushroom" (because of taste), Enoki, Pholiota nameko (maybe), King oysters.

And why would you want to sell them cheaper? You dont like yourself or you dont like other mushroom growers?

I want the buisness. If I sell them for the same price, why would the restaraunts choose to buy from me. I need to give them incentive.

Better product or product they cannot get elsewhere?
Price war can only result in walmart wages.

Ok, that makes sense. The Pholiota nameko, and the enoki, look like a good idea...

They can be grown indoors, Newearthmushroom's post about growing Neolentinus ponderosa
They can be grown on supplemented sawdust, softwood or soft hardwood. The yields though, I think, are not very good. They are an excellent edible. It's a great mushroom to grow, if only to smell the mycelium it's wonderful. Once cooked it tastes excellent, but doesn't retain the piny smell.
You are probably better off growing something else, if you want to make money at it.

There's a Lentinus tigrinus culture bouncing around here, too. I just spawned four blocks on supplemented sawdust, and I will most definitely post my results. It's a very vigorous species! My jars went from agar inoculation to full colonization in less than a week.

I have L. tigrinus (~1lb bag) producing pins as we speak! Pinning near the base of the bag. Inoc. 12/16 with ~2-3mL multi-spore. Incubated at 70 F (+/- 2 F).
