Obama considering CNN's Gupta as surgeon general
    #9559581 - 01/06/09 06:57 PM (15 years, 24 days ago)

oh dear :boobs:

Quote:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President-elect Barack Obama has asked neurosurgeon and CNN medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta to be surgeon general, The Washington Post reported on Tuesday.

The Washington Post's online service, washingtonpost.com, said Gupta had been offered the job, traditionally the U.S. top spokesman on matters of public health.

Gupta has told Obama administration officials he wants the job and is undergoing final checks, the Post said, citing two sources with knowledge of the situation. The Post and CNN said Gupta has declined comment on the matter.

Gupta had a two-hour meeting with Obama in Chicago in November, the Post said, and later met former Sen. Tom Daschle, who has been tapped to lead the administration's efforts to reform health care as Health and Human Services Secretary.

Obama told Gupta he could be the highest-profile surgeon general in history and would have an expanded role in giving healthcare policy advice, the Post said.

Gupta served in the 1990s as a White House fellow, where he was a special adviser to Hillary Clinton, writing speeches and helping her formulate policies.

In addition to his work at CNN, Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon and professor at Emory University School of Medicine in Atlanta, Emory University Hospital and Grady Memorial Hospital.

The surgeon general leads the 6,000-member commissioned corps of the U.S. Public Health Service and is the top federal government spokesman on matters of public health.

Surgeon generals in the past have used the office as a bully pulpit to urge Americans to give up smoking, battle AIDS and tackle other healthcare concerns.

this really surprises me, normally his appointments are people from
fields not relating to the position they'll hold, I cant believe
he's not putting another career politician with no medical training
in as surgeon general

Previous Surgeon Generals (from Clinton and Bush):

Dr. Whitney - DVM (Doctor of Veterinary Medicine)
Dr. Elders, M.D.
Dr. Manley, M.D.
Dr. Satcher, M.D., Ph.D.
Dr. Moritsugu, M.D.
Dr. Carmona, R.N., M.D.
Dr. Moritsugu, M.D.
Dr. Galson, M.D.

"Normally [Obama's] appointments are people from fields not relating to the position they'll hold"

He was surprised that Obama was appointing somebody that is actually qualified for the position rather than picking unqualified political friends like Al Gore, Leon Panetta or Tom Daschle.

What about his pick of Steven Chu for secretary of the department of energy? That seems like a good choice.

Good grief but you can be an ass sometimes. Why on earth would I object to this appointment? It's probably the best appointment Obama's made so far.

If there has to be a Surgeon General (and as a Laissez-faire Capitalist I cannot help pointing out the very concept is absurd) we might as well have one who knows what he's talking about. Contrast Gupta's expertise in the field for which he is being given responsibility with that of Leon Panetta. Or Hillary Clinton, for that matter.

Gupta's beatdown of Michael Moore's mockumentary Sicko was classic. That alone makes him a good choice.

It would have been nice to have a more pot friendly Surgeon General. I didn't vote for Obama, but I did have high hopes for him right after the election, falling for the hype of 'change'.

I don't know what his view is now, but here is link to an article by Dr. Sanjay Gupta dated Oct. 29, 2006 from Time Magazine:
Why I Would Vote No On Pot

He does acknowledge the medical benefits of marijuana, but is against outright legalization. So maybe medical marijuana is a possibilty in the next administration.

I'm just hoping that Dr. Craker gets his permission to begin that research.  I'm surprised no one mentioned this report...

"On November 13, MAPS Researcher Dr. Michael Mithoefer, MD shared the successes of his study of MDMA-assisted psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) at the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies 24th annual conference and subsequently across the world via a phenomenal TV report by CNN’s Dr. Sanjay Gupta, and in print in Nature News and Nature."

At least we know that he knows that there is research out there that support the therapeutic use of psychedelics.  Not likely he'll do much to support it but I am generally happy with this pick.  I agree it's the best so far.

The few times I've watched that guy on CNN he seemed like a total tool.

I realize he's constrained by editing/producing demands, but still.

And I share veggie's concerns.  Medicine is about the best example of an area that should obviously be libertarian in adminstration.  The fact that he has an appointment that has decided marijuana proposals are bad is ridiculous.  Will he be among those who think "medicine" does not include killing a patient who requests it, is mentally sane, and is eminentally expected to die and is currently in great agony?

I'm sick of these guys deciding they know best and fucking over the doctor and patients who should have every right to make their own decisions.  LIke phred I have no idea why we need the position at all- really stupid.

Like veggie I didn't vote for obama, and voted for someone who would not tell my state, the traditional regulators of medicine, how to run medicine and who woul dnot endeavor to tell me what I can and cannot do with my body- medicine related or not.

His position?  I know better than you.  And your doctor.  And you have to do what I say.  And cuz I wouldn't do it I can't imagine why you'd want to, and that's good enough reason to through you in jail and spend 50$ billion dollars a year and cause many needless deaths and incarcerations.

A telling excerpt:

Quote:

But I suspect that most of the people eager to vote yes on the new ballot measures aren't suffering from glaucoma, Alzheimer's or chemo-induced nausea. Many of them just want to get stoned legally. That's why I, like many other doctors, am unimpressed with the proposed legislation, which would legalize marijuana irrespective of any medical condition.

Heaven forbid.  I suppose he's against morphine, amphetamines, and benzodiazepines being avialable as well?  I mean irrespective of any medical conditions and benifits, they just want to get high.  So because they want to get high (as everyone does- even the person who eats cake or whatnot is getting psychotropic rewards) it doesn't matter the merits.

To jail with everyone who doesn't make choices I would make.  (throw in a whole bunch of correlations with no experimental evidence to boot- studies which were done on druggies, the third variable problems of which are self-evident, and you've got a recipe for self-righteous condemnation)

Of course gupta doesn't mention the "take their houses and put them in jail" part, but he surely knows that that is the consequence of making something illegal, which he's agreed that's what he's voting against, no?

People need to learn to differentiate between what they would wish others wouldn't do and what others should be financially penalized for and thrown in jail for.  Its not at all the same thing.
