Mr. Mushrooms said: The "something else," if you haven't heard of it, is something called, The Botanical Eye. It is the ability to notice anomalies in the biological architecture of an area. Dr. Schultes, of Harvard, was famous for it. One time he was at the edge of an Amazonian forest and picked out a new species that no one had described before merely because it was different from the surrounding vegetation. It is the inverse of visual imprinting and, as far as I know, fairly rare. It may be that certain hunters, you and canid come to mind, may have it.
That's interesting. I've never heard of it, but I definitely relate. I'll totally look into that. Yeah, since I was young I've always noticed things that stand out from their setting. It's been terribly distracting. It began with animals. Not only do they stand out texturally, but they move separate from their environment. I mean to say that even a very subtle movement of an insect among leaves (for instance) blowing in the wind will catch my eye. But it's not just movement- texture, shadows, and colours as well. I don't know if that is consistent with the "Botanical Eye", but that is my experience.

Mr. Mushrooms said: Test this hypothesis for me the next time you are hunting in group with others around you. Are you detecting different mushrooms before others do? Maybe if you reflect back you can remember occasions like that.
All the time. Little mushrooms. I can't help but notice every single one. It is distracting if I am looking for something specific, but I don't mind... It just takes that much longer to hunt. I've been made fun of by fellow hunters for noticing every tiny mushroom along the path. (You know who you are ) Actually, on a foray not long ago, the leader, upon being presented with the first 3 or so miniature mushrooms i saw, told me "Oh I don't care about those little things, let's try and look for the 'macro-fungi'".
There have been forays where I notice mushrooms or "shrumps" off in the distance and I'll start walking off from the group towards it and often times everyone just gives me a weird look until I start uncovering a mushroom.
Maybe you'll see what I mean when we go hunting.
But yeah, I'll check out what you describe. I wonder if it is a fundamentally different perception or just an exaggerated awareness?

It just kind of ironic because it's almost like you're asking if psychedelics is dead, and asking it on a primarily psychedelic forum. Like you're answering your own question at the same time you're asking it. About the only thing more redundant I can think of is to put a picture of Stamets up there and ask, 'is mushrooms dead yet?"

HMM, you don't get it. Some people do. But it is one of those things, if you're with me, rad! If you are offended, excellent! If you don't get it..... well, nevermind......
