why are you using light?

i always see people posting saying they use 8-12 hours of light a day for their grow chamber. this isnt necessary, right? i thought you didnt need any light except for initiating pinning. seems like a waste of electricity to me, or does it help them out?

You need light to help initiate pinning. Light after they pin is only to give them a target direction in which to grow.

Mother nature knows best. Considering that, 8 to 12 hours of light, is about what mother nature generaly provides. It does not need to be bright light.

One of those 60 watt twist type compact fluorescent bulbs -- you can screw in a normal socket only draws about 16 watts of power & has a life of around 8000 hours.

Rather than a normal bulb, that draws more power & lasts on average 1000 hours.

One of those bulbs on a timer will suffice to illuminate a 10 X 10 X 10 grow chamber just fine.

That is not a waste of energy. Unless you think growing thick, large shrooms is?

my little experience shows that light is needed for (a) initiate pinning process and (b) guide the shrooms to grow straight upwards.

of course (b) needs a light source to enter the terrarium ONLY from top, but that doesnt mean you have to make light time arrangements of any kind. Just leave it free to have the room lighting...

btw, i dont like putting lamp on top of terrarium, that raises up temp and my temps are already too high...

LOL, the raccoons "terrerium" is big enough he can walk into it & close the door behind him, then sit & have a cold beer from the fridge in it. It also has air/con installed, for cold shocking the whole thing, if required. So, that is not an issue.

I only provide light for a maximum of ten minutes a day, more often then not juts 2-3 minutes a day. The mushroom cultivator states that fractions of a second of light can induce pinning, my few minutes work effectivly so why bothing with hours.
