Help ID?
    #954916 - 10/12/02 02:06 PM (19 years, 13 days ago)

I found these next to an old tree stump somewhere in Tennessee.  They seem to have very hard stems, they snap like a tree limb.  The gills appear to extend to the stem in the more mature ones but don't appear to touch in the younger ones.  They have a root that extends deep into the ground.

Anyone know what these are?

It's good that you noticed the rooting stems - a very important feature for identification. Your mushrooms look like Xerula radicata, which are "edible but nothing special". In other words, don't waste your time cooking and eating them.

An interesting find.

Happy Mushrooming!

Yeah they smell good but would be very crunchy I would assume!  There seems to be hundreds of them poping up around the stump.  They print white and have no staining what so ever.  They smell of sweet honey carmel?  The big one I am holding probably weighed almost 2-3oz.  Heavy little boogers!  Thanks for the info guys!
