does anyone here have experience shaving with a straight razor? i was thinking about starting to do it because getting a good shave with disposables is freaking expensive!

Well, ok, by the eighth or ninth time, stuff gets a bit rough, but I shave in the morning when I'm not really wide awake yet, so it doesn't really bother me.

Watch out that you don't fuck yourself up. Shaving with a straight razor is really dangerous, and takes quite some skill.
Having thick beard hairs myself, I can recommend the safety razor, using the wellknown two sided razor blades.
Not this crap:
but this is where its at:
It screws open to accept these:
and this is what you use it with:
It takes some skill and you can accidentally cut yourself too, but not the horrid gash a straight razor can give you.

i gave up on wet shaving a long time ago
1, because i have heavy facial hair, and shaving constantly irritates my skin alot.
2. because its expensive
3. because its inconvenient and time consuming.
i just have a norelco dry shaver or whatever with those 3 spinning head thingys, and that works great for me, but i'm not picky about a close shave - i like a little bit of scruffiness.

I gave up on electric shaving when I had several instances the knives jammed on my beard hairs and I had the shaver hanging from my face
That gilette type crap with the multiple blades with me works like this: I shave, short hairs get stuck between the blades, sticking oit like daggers and next thing you know the remainder of the shave feels like scrubbing your cheeks with a toothbrush. The hairs get lodged in place, you can NOT rinse them out.
So Safety Razor all the way. Easy to use and easy to clean, and spare blades don't cost much given their service life.

For me, comfortably, 3 times per blade side, so 6x per razor blade. With a lighter beard, longer. The holder that accepts the blades lasts a lifetime if well maintained, I got mine from my father many years ago.

Hmm.. i only get slight snags, but rarely. Never what you said.
If my hair is too long for the flat spin blades, i pop open the trimmer on the back and use that to shorten, then complete with the flat heads.

sure, and spending about $20 on a pack of mach 3s every month or so is expensive. compared to buying a straight razor once and having it for life.

I have dry, sensitive skin and a thick beard, so I use single blade disposable razors. They have a huge gap for your facial hairs, so they resist clogging. I bought 5 12 packs at Family Dollar for a buck a piece. That's 60 razors for $5. Needless to say, I use them once and throw them away and I get a fantastic shave. I shave about once every 2-3 weeks. I like to go from clean shaven to a full beard and back again every month. That is not compatible with most shavers.
I used to use electric razors, and they fucked up my skin badly. Typical disposable razors didn't work, either, but the el cheapo single blade disposables work best. Fuck technology!

key with electric razors
is take a washcloth to warm water, squeeze most of the water out, and press it against your facial hair for 15-30 seconds
do this a couple times, and then pat your face dry and the shave is much smoother

I grew in a beard after becoming irritated from shaving with a blade. Now I shower before I shave to open my pores and just do some maintenance work with one of those 3 round headed electrics.
The barber shop I used to go to all the barbers used a straight edge razor to clean everybody up. Every time I got a haircut stoned I'd fear for my life the guy would slip and take off my ear lol
