The tree that keeps on producing amanita muscaria
    #9532868 - 01/02/09 04:22 PM (15 years, 1 month ago)

I have posted here a couple times to get a verification on Amanita Muscaria and just wanted to share some more with you.

This tree just keeps on producing those beautiful mushrooms, just in time. The best part about it, is its right down the street from where I live right here in San Francisco, CA. Its great. I plan on taking them for the first time tomorrow.

Also, I figured that when these sprout that they are indeed a dark red, but due to the abnormal weather we are having in SF, the sun is hitting them and turning them an orange color. Some of the ones that are early in sprout are indeed full red.

Well, they're in the group and intoxicating.  I'll leave to the Amanita experts to narrow it down.

those grow all over the place in my area. i've never tried them, but if you're asking how long it takes to dry amanita muscaria- overnight in the oven on low, or 2-3 days in front of a fan.

Make sure you do dry them over a low heat. The worms inside (you might not be able to tell their there) will eat away while it is drying and possibly ruin a good batch. I wrap mine in paper towels and put them on top of my cable box's. it might not hurt to put a desiccant in there or a fan on them as well.

There are basically no red fly agaric look alikes.

Amanita parcivolvata is the only A. muscaria var. flavivolvata look alike, but it occurs only in the southeast and doesn't overlap with A. muscaria flavivolvata.

Amanita muscaria var. persicina also occurs in the eastern U.S but is a pinkish melon color.
This variation will soon be getting its own species status.

You shouldn't eat any red capped Amanita from the south east however, they are most likely A. parcivolvata and have been known to cause gastric distress.

Maybe someone can help me. Im in SoCal and whenever i go on a walk through this one park I do see amanitas. Obviously i need to get pictures and do the proper fill out, but these ones are a "Yellowish/orange". Any idea what i could be finding? They look JUST like amanita muscaria warts and all But its not dark red.

(No im not gonna eat anything based off guesses)

Probably a variation of muscaria.  You need to look for a collared base of the stem.  They look like rings near the bottom.
