Fred info on the dimensions please? I can't find them online. This may be nice for my filtering needs.
I'm trying to get a 12x36x6(custom) ULPA @ 99.999% I know it's overkill, but it's the only item I am paying for when building my flow hood, so I might as well. Also, no reason to waste a 900cfm blower for less area than that.
Thanks.

http://www.holmesproducts.com/Product.aspx?pid=5209 Not sure of the dimensions. They aren't very large though. I've made a design with one, two, and four of them now.
> got any recommendations for a home-made flow hood?
I usually build some pretty big and heavy ones. I usually start with a piece of countertop for the bottom. I like using very durable and easy to clean material. Then I build the sides and top. Last time I used white marine fiberglass coated plywood. Otherwise certain types of paneling or plywood with laminate attached. When the pieces are cut I take a circular saw and "dato" groves into the inside of the left and right side pieces. This is the grove that the plexiglass front slides up and down on. The top is shorther than the sides and extends only to the groves. Then you get a piece of plexiglass cut to the right size. They're usually a little too flimsy so I take a piece of angle aluminum and bolt it to the bottom of the plexiglass, which makes a good handle also. Then I cut holes the propersize for my filter(s) in the top piece. Space them evenly and place them towards the back. Then I silicone or hot glue the filters in and build a small box for the top to cover the filters and adapt them to the blower. I fill this plenum space with polyfill as a prefilter. Then just attach the blower and you're good to go.
Check the links in my post above. The design with the plastic tub using arm holes is pretty slick. I would have simply turned the unit upside down and attached it directly to the tub though.
Here is the general design you should follow for non-laminar flow hoods...

I use a sliding front rather than hand holes, but the rest of the design is similar. And no that's not me, and yes it is a pretty gay pic.

I actually got a kick ass laminar flow hood at auction for $85. I just don't use it because the one that I've made and am using now works just fine and I don't want to waste the time and energy to move them around.
But deals like those are few and far between. I've always been able to get the materials for cheap or free to build my own. I've always made huge ones for around $200 or less in supplies. The size of the ones I make can't be had for less than a thousand or more dollars.
The simplest homebrew designs can be made for as little as $50.

Menace was refering to one that you can actually do agar on and at the prices that most people will have to pay. ie most people don't get blowers/HEPA's for free.
By 'actually do agar' I mean it would have to be at least as tall as my dishes stacked (25 per sleeve) or taller than a 7" jar to do G2G transfers.
Not saying you can't make one for under 200, mine only ran 100 or so in parts, but like you I came up on some freebies.

I had planned to hit the phone book for a free blower. I went to the HVAC section and was going to call each one till I found a free blower. The first one I called had one for me. No charge and they didn't even give a shit what I was using it for. I had told them it was for a "research project" so I was kinda surprised they didn't even ask what it was for. LOL
Anyways it's pretty easy to get a used blower for free.
