My first Hericium erinaceous attempt

I must say that I am very disappointed with the size of the fruit on the right!

Each and every new mushroom I grow continues to blow my mind with how beautiful and amazing they form.
I think this is almost ready to harvest - maybe in another day? (The fruit on the left is just over six inches at its widest point.)

Nice! I believe you should wait for the teeth to elongate a bit. They get to be about a cm long. Or you could eat it now.

frankenstoen: you should not be disappointed, this is a beautiful grow. Hericium tends to abort all fruits but one, and it will put everything into that one fruit. What you are seeing is normal, and the size of the fruit on the left is quite substantial.

My tongue was firmly in my cheek - I'm quite pleased by the big fruit! (Even if it did suck the life force from the smaller one.)
So, thinking ahead, to after the harvest - Do I need to dunk and soak or cold shock or anything to stimulate a second fruiting?

I usually give it a two week rest, then dunk in cold (but not icy) water for 24hrs, and keep for 2-3 days at 50-60 then back to FC.

The problem with these is that they are hard to "dunk" because you cant really take off the plastic..

I've been dunking bags that have holes poked in them thusly:
1. Boil up a few gallons of tap water. Let it cool. 2. Place bags in a disinfected tub. 3. Pour water into each bag or just into the tub. Add a bucket of ice. 4. Place a smaller lid over the (floating) blocks and weigh it down with a brick.
They don't seem to gain a lot of water weight, but they do start to pin.

That was a good looking mushroom! How'd it taste? How'd you cook it? What's growing off to the left there? What's your favorite color?

I actually ate some from another bag that I let fruit on the top surface - I'm making a spore print from this baby right now.
It was surprisingly sweet. You could easily fool somebody into thinking it was lobster or crawldad or some other shellfish.
I sliced it and fried it in almond oil, then added a touch of butter at the end. Anybody have any recipes?
Those are shiitakes growing on the left side of the frame.
My favorite color is...
