New species and lots of them!!!!! Part 1 (PICS)

Well for the past 3 or so weeks this mushrooms has been fruitng quite abundantly! So far I've found somehwere between 1000-2000 mushrooms this season of this species, its been incredible! They are so much fun to pick, they fruit on a flood plain back in some old woods that makes for great scenery as well as security, I never see another person out there while I'm picking. I can find them for about a mile or two down this flood plain, weilii will also show up out there from time to time. Picking them is similar to what I think of semilanceta picking to be, searching through tall clumps of sedge grass for small petite caps, its loads of fun
Here are some pics...

Tell us some more about these little guys? Print color, smell, do they bruise and how fast?
Is it just me or do they resemble weilii a bit?
Really a beautiful shroom, LK... you're my hero.
(p.s. How potent are they? as opposed to Weilii of course :P)

Smell is simialr to weilii but still different, weilii just has that extra weird punch to it that sets it apart. And of course they look somewhat simialr to weilii, they are Psilocybes, weilii also looks like azures, cyans, baeos, caerulescens and many more, but this species is definitely 100% not weilii! Its much smaller for one, and has many other differences as well. Its hard to tell but most the mushrooms are only an inch or two tall and the stems only a few millemeters thick. This species is also much more striate in the cap than weilii and has a seperable pellicle.
Prints is purple, they bruise blue about as fast as weilii, and they are similar in potency but different in overall trip qualities.
Check part two of my post for more pics to compare to....

These look almost like a varient of p. stunzii [and sound to be of similar potency; and with a similar bluing reaction], although without much of an annulus that I can see from your pics [also the habitat seems different--stunzii USUALLY are found among wood chips I believe]. Little Brown Mushroom identification can get pretty creative. What are you going to call them if they are indeed a new species?
Nice find. You must have picked half the mushrooms worth picking in your county by now.

I'm thinking of naming them after Mckenna, or atleast I'd like to. What do you all think about that?

You should call those Shrooms "Storm Keepers" lol -The Keepers of the Storm.
The Lizard King sure has conjeurd up a swirling storm of Psilocybe mushroom-finds in his great land of Georgia, and Georgians Shroomers are again sitting on the gold mine!

Yes teonan, same species, glad you like the name idea.
I doubt anyone has seen these in they're yard, they haven't ever shown up in grass lawns yet, and I search plenty of them picking weilii and have yet to come across it. It grows in sandy redish soil along a flood plain that gets disturbed yearly. quite different habitat that a lawn.

no dude,i dont think you are a dumbass, but i do think that a mushroom can change shape/size and a few other characteristics if the enviroment changes, nutrients change etc.
they look very similar to the psilocybe weilli
actually when i was hunting in Ga the specimens we picked looked more like the ones in your pics than most weilli pics i have seen
we picked them from grass
i think a mushroom can change if the enviroment changes
i believe an enviroment has all to do with a charactristics of a strain/mushroom
even if it is another form of weilli,it is still a new species
i wasnt flaming you LK

LK,
That one labeled atlantis does not look like my atlantis. Can you send me some pics of both the "unknown spp." and "atlantis"? Some of your new spp pics in the wild actually look quite a bit like atlantis, but others do not. It could be something like weilii, that comes in many forms.
Send me some pics and we can try to sort it out--and get some specimens to the herbarium... Ultimately, that is the only way you will know for certain. Let me know if you need any help.
I hope the weather is still co-operating in N. Ga. I am missing the area about now...

I left Dr. H at the UGA a voice message and will be calling him on monday to set up an appointment. I also found yet either another new spcies or the one from your old neighbor hood(tall skinny one) but in a new location, found up in suwanee next to weilii in bermuda grass, only two specimens. I'm just going to seperate all collections label them unidentified and see what the good mycologists come up with.
Man, I found about 400 more weilii today, this season has been abesolutly unreal!! Hope you can make it back in time for a little picking.

with all the rain you've been getting over the past several weeks, everything is probably coming-up now--try to get those new ones in as fresh as possible for herbarium specimens. keep looking as you never know what you will find. i found my two species the same day, within 5 minutes of eachother--though confirmation has taken well over a year that there were two and that they are distinct species.
as i mentioned some time ago, i found weilii a couple years back on a flood plane. i believe that this is their natural habitat. all the new building and turning under of woody debris is mimicing this habitat to where there is the current explosion of weilii, due to the vast expansion of their habitat.
i also found three tiny mushrooms back in 2000 near the edge of a construction site, they looked very psilo like--but the specimens were lost so i never got to bring them in for documentation. this one could be out there as well--if it is different from the others found to date.
keep your eyes to the ground... never know what you will find...

Actually speaking of natural habitats I found one weilii in the middle of the woods today in a low lying area thats kinda wet and swampy. I was riding my 4 wheeler all day and happened to look down and spot one lone weilii in the middle of now where. I also found 9 weilii in the woods last week that I believe were natural weilii. I do find them in they're natural habitat, its just not common and there aren't nearly as many.

Hey LK,
I was just wondering.....
I understand how you would love to pick so many musrhooms, and I know I would be pretty damn stoked to see the patches that you are picking at, but, why must you pick so much?
It really seems like overkill to the amount you are picking, and Im sure if you didnt pick them, others wouldnt and they probably wouldnt be used...however, it seems like if you let them just do their job in the natural ecosystem they would be able to do well for the envoirnment and keep growing stronger and possibly more widespread every year. Spores will be more likely to get spread and whatnot.
My Ecology mentor who had discovered a new species of lizards back in the late 1970''s in Chile, had a co-worker collect some of the lizards to be brought back to the lab. Since this lizard was so untouched for so long, and the speicies were not abundant, collecting only 20 of these lizards actually made the species go extinct within a year.
Im not saying your going to make these mushrooms go extinct, however I just feel that it is a little heartbreaking to see all the picked and dead living fungi for just one or however many friends you have.
Im not flaming you LK, I find you to be a wonderful additon to the shroomery and I love your pictures and find tremediously. Please do not take this as a threat.

I hear ya man I have been passing up all weilii that don't fit my criteria lately, I only pick the best of the best anymore. It really is getting to be overkill though. I always see more and more everyday, I just cant help it sometimes, but your right, enough is enough. I have enough mushrooms to last for the rest of my life if weilii was to stop fruiting tommarow I think I'm going to concentrate more on the newer species and just let weilii be for a while. Lately I have been taking folks from the boards here at the shroomery and other friends of mine on picking expeditions, hopefully ganjashroom and phoshaman will come picking with me in the next few weeks. Its no fun to pick them by myself anymore, I love watching the excitement in peoples face when I take them hunting and they find 200-300 mushrooms Its the best feeling in the world.
The overall picture though, I'm not hurting a thing, the weilii are everywhere and they are here to stay. My picking a thousand or two a week isn;t nothing compared to whats out there, its mice nuts in the whole grand scheme of things.

Cool man.
I had a feeling you werent just picking every single guy, I just wanted some reassurance, that makes me feel better hee hee..
Just had a mushroom trip last night for the first time in a LONG time, I just had a lot of "human destruction" theories running throuhg my mind for a while Its so sad sometimes to see the destruction of man and how the animals are the ones to be affected most
