I know some guys use a bit of lime in the sawdust blocks too...but you don't hear of that nearly as often as the Dung loving species.

There are a lot of misconceptions about sawdust and wood chips. Sawdust is not always the same. It depends on what tool made it, or more generically, what is the particle size and shape. Certain types of sawdust can be used as is: the kind that is made by electric planers, rough circular saw blades and carving machines, and my favorite kind: chainsaw sawdust. Or more generically, the type that has an average particle size 1-5mm. Finer sawdust, made by regular saws tend to be too fine, and will compact too much. This type needs some bigger particles mixed in (chips or planer shavings). The powder that comes out of power sanders should be avoided completely: it is unusable and will not colonize at all or will colonize in a spotty manner leaving too much for contaminants to come in and not produce much fruit to speak of.

Now, on the water content. General guidelines is 60-70% moisture by weight. Now, that does not do in a lot of cases, see above on sawdust. Different types of sawdust and different woods have different water holding capacities. I am a firm believer in the squeeze method: add moisture while mixing till you can barely squeeze a single drop from a fistful, then add bran.

They like hardwood dowels soaked in WBS and water.
Some WBS in there too, just something for them to eat while they worked into the dowels.
added some coffee grounds and verm and drywall too. just cheese grate it.

They also like WBS/verm/coffee/drywall.
These guys are trying to get out already.
From LC by the way.

I really should get these guys in a fruiting chamber but I wanna do logs in the yard.

Got a few big jars too.

This is my old lab...has nothing to do with this but I really miss it!
For a big jar one tablespoon used coffee, one teaspoon grated drywall, and a handful of vermiculite. The rest soaked WBS.

Add the coffee, verm, drywall gypsum after the soak. really messy to strain if you add them before the soak to the WBS.

Also I had those dowels soaking with the WBS, don't know if it did anything but took over the jars crazy fast!

The "X" on the jars are injection points. They get all turned around and I loose track otherwise. If anything starts growing first before the "X" I know I got a potential problem on my hands.

One more thing, all jars had envelope Tyvec lids, no metal lid used. just put a square of Tyvek on the jar and crank the ring down over it. Foil added on top to keep it dry in PC and left on during incubation.

Incubated at room temp in a cupboard.

I use the pine litter stuff because it's what I have available.  The heat/pressure treatment eliminates the anti-fungal resins in the sawdust, and it's a lot less dense than hardwood sawdust, so it colonizes rapidly.  I think I'm losing something by not using wood chips, though.  I may try using some in my next batch of bags, after boiling them for a while.  I also want to try recycling my sawdust, which can, indeed be reused.

Incidentally, Denger, I think I've discovered something interesting!  Newspaper pellets.  They remain solid in jars after sterilization, so they can help with breaking up sawdust spawn.  Things look promising with the last batch of jars I made up.  I just made up some pioppino blocks using a hyper-nutrified (1/2 c of corn gluten meal per jar) sawdust spawn on plain sawdust.  Maitake spawn seems easier to break up, too.

Well I wanted some good air exchange. And at the time I was pretty short on lids cause I had them on other jars or made LC lids out of them.
The foil acts as an air throttle the same as a lid with a bunch of holes in it so it works out the same.
If I want to fruit in the jar I'll remove the foil and punch a hole in the filter. They should crawl right out and fruit.....Ewwwww!, that sounds kinda gross! Why the hell do I eat these things?

Lion's Mane mycelium is not ropey - it's rather wispy. It will likely begin fruiting tiny fruits on your grain soon if it is a good strain. Then you will know for sure.

Yes, it does look similar to cobweb. Sometimes, it sends very thin low density strands first, which are almost invisible on sawdust and grain, which makes people think its slow to colonize, but it thickens out later. You can see it on agar sometimes when looking at the dish in the reflected light: there is an outer rings of very low density mycelium, and a thicker wispy middle.

Yo noobie those lions mane dishes you sent me are starting to pin lol..  I took one out the fridge just now to let it warm up, and it has baby pins.. I tried taking a picture but you can't really tell in the pic.. I will have to take another after it warms up and I open it tomorrow..

Here are the pics I did get, you can kinda see the darker spots when looking with the naked eye they look like little pins..

I found some hericium in the wild, and sandwiched flesh between cardboard, the mycelium colonizing it is very "cobweb-like"
though its obviously not cobweb mold.

u can see the thin whispy "scouts" that lion mane uses to find good sources of nutrients.

Yeah, they really seem to do nothing for a while then the whole damn jar is white! I mark where I shoot LC but honestly it just seems to show up everywhere all at once, no matter how big the jar.

Damion5050 where is your avatar from? I gotta either send her a puppy or buy whatever movie you clipped that from!

I vote to make Damion5050's avatar 3 minutes and 26 seconds long!

Oddly enough that's about how long I'd last with that girl....
