requiem for a dream

it sucked imo. "spun" is more like it. requiem seemed to be just a "drugs are bad" bs. sure some of it was real and drugs CAN be bad but that was just a one sided head trip for them young kids.

One of my fav movies, don't think it's comparable to Spun, even if I liked it too.
And I don't think it says "drugs are bad", it's more like "abusing certain drugs won't let you go far", don't you think so?
Overall it's a well directed movie and what can I say about the soundtrack... it kind of gets under your skin, somehow. It fits so good with the movie.

i didn't like reqeium for a dream... i didn't think the themes were about drugs though...
i thought it had alot more to do with happiness, the nature of habit, and the the gaps between our aspirations and reality.

my negative opinion toward it is fueled by people who have no real knowledge of drugs, who then watch requiem and in the end all they can say is "goddamn i hate junkies, man"

Requiem >>> Spun.
To each their own of course, but I strongly disagree that it sucked.

come on guys... look below the surface of things a little.
from wiki
"However, Aaronofsky has said:[5]
Requiem for a Dream is not about heroin or about drugs… The Harry-Tyrone-Marion story is a very traditional heroin story. But putting it side by side with the Sara story, we suddenly say, "Oh, my God, what is a drug?" The idea that the same inner monologue goes through a person's head when they're trying quit drugs as with cigarettes, as when they're trying to not eat food so they can lose 20 pounds, was really fascinating to me. I thought it was an idea that we hadn't seen on film and I wanted to bring it up on the screen."
"In the book, Selby refers to the "American Dream" as amorphous and unattainable, a compilation of the various desires of the story's characters. All the characters use some form of addiction as a substitute for the actual fulfillment of a dream, choosing immediate sensory placation over a struggle for some higher good. Selby explains the title of his book in this context—as a requiem for some specific dream (a dream) as opposed to the larger, overarching "American Dream" (the dream).[page # needed] While an individual dream can wither and die, the American Dream is persistent and cannot be easily overcome, certainly not by those who are so entangled in it that they cannot see it."

I think Requiem far surpasses Spun. Requiem to me is much more thoughtful in the sense that it takes a realistic spin to things and lets you identify with the characters in your own way; by using multiple drugs and circumstances that we can all fall prey to. I believe someone who has no knowledge about drugs will look at each film with a distaste for drugs. With Spun they will look at speed users as a dirty sub-society rather than with Requiem they can find someone who they know personally who can relate to one of the victims/characters. Requiem is a hard to pilll to swallow and for that I believe it deserves much more respect because not everyone can tolerate things of that nature. In other words it is way too realistic for a lot of people to let into their bubble.
Requiem is a masterpiece in cinematography and storytelling.

With all the horrible movies that are released today I can't really see how you can say this movie sucked. I liked the movie, and it was certainly much better then some of the recent shit to come out like "Eagle Eye", "Jumper" and "Juno". Plus it has that awesome soundtrack.

I loved it until I did heroin.
Also spun sucked ass I never liked it.
Fuck drug movies they never do them justice, the closest they came was Fear and Loathing and even that wasn't that great.

I think Trainspotting and Drugstore Cowboy are pretty good. Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas was a pretty poor movie, which is unfortunate because the book was excellent, the director of the film and the actors are excellent: the film had so much potential, but it just wasn't very good.

atleast there was some truthful aspects to requiem for a dream. spun was the most horrible movie i've ever seen. the only thing that they got right in that movie is that meth users don't sleep. everything else was bullshit.
trainspotting and drugstore cowboy ftw!
edit: if you haven't seen drugstore cowboy, its on google video.

But I can see why you might not like it. It's an odd film for sure. Everyone looks at it differently

I haven't read the whole thread, and the synopsis that was posted explains my opinion of the movie in greater detail, but I'm pretty sure that its less about "drugs are bad mmkay" and more about the parallel between Rx drugs and illegal drugs.
Although the message is easily confused.
Human Traffic has more of a junkie story if I remember correctly.

Requiem for a Dream is amazing. It isn't a drug film anyway, so if you're focusing on the drug use then you aren't getting the whole film.

Something like Trainspotting. Requiem has drugs in it, but they aren't the main thematic point of the film. It's more about hopes/dreams/desire that sort of shit. IMO

as someone said, drugstore cowboy.
that's a good drug movie. then Trainspotting is still better then Requiem, but Pi (an earlier Afronofsky film) is better then that still, in my opinion. so Dream is mainly on the average, so i'd agree with the OP.
Candy, the movie, is ok.

I finally saw it last week and it is about drugs but it's also more about how dependent people may get using these drugs and how consequences may occur. The guy lost his arm, his friend stayed in jail, his girl friend may still be hooking and his grandmother is now in a mental institution.. I believe both guys may learn from their mistakes because they showed that they were withdrawing from the drug and if they can over come it.. then they beat the drug. However, his girl friend just came up with a bag full of coke and hugged it as if it were only lifeline, so she will continue to use it.. sad movie but a very interesting one.. I love the camera effects and mimics the anxiety and paranoia of a real life trip. i'm not sure what kind of pills the grandma took but she hallucinated big time.. scary for an old woman.

You're a joke. It's a movie about drugs destroying lives.
Drugs do that. Even caffeine.
It never puts any angle on it about that being the only possible outcome. It's about one guy and his experience. It's not a propaganda piece at all, obvious from the fact that it doesn't spew bullshit and is fairly realistic.

You know what.. true with what you say.. If someone believes drugs are truly "good" for you.. then that person must be in denial.. Drugs aren't "good," but they can open a door to a new reality/experience.. It's good to try things but it's bad to become dependent on them.. Even shrooms can leave a person psychologically dependent. I was for a while and now I'm taking it slow. i wont chase drugs anymore. I'll let it find me.

I don't think the movie is about drugs being bad specifically. It's more about how prescription drugs have the same potential for life destruction as illegal drugs do, it doesn't matter what drug you do, its how much you do that's good or bad.
