Junior and senior year of high school was a major time of expansion for me, but I don't recommend taking these drugs so young. It took a lot of psychic reconstruction to integrate those experiences into my worldview, especially the salvia phase of things. 17 yr/old me was clueless yet thought he knew everything. However, in hindsight I wouldn't change a thing because those experiences settled me into this particular corner of the universe.

That's a lot closer to the ages I started to dabble with things, tho I still didn't try cannabis until I was around 18/19 years old.
Every time these sorts of threads pop up on the shroomery (it's a pretty common topic of discussion) I'm always very surprised to see that so many folks started to dabble with things at such a super young age.
It seems like 11 to 16 years old is a pretty common age that people started to dabble with things, even if just cannabis. And I find that to be crazy lol.
I can not imagine being high on anything when I was around 11 to 13 to 15 years old...I was always super curious about "drugs" and what an altered consciousness would feel like, even as a little kid I had a lot of curiosity about drugs but I didn't have any interest in trying to seek out a drug or trying a drug until basically after high school when I started to become very interested in psychedelics.
I don't even know where I would have got "drugs" when I was 11 to 15 years old or the money to buy them....but I certainly would not have been able to handle being lit/stoned on weed while that young....And I certainly wouldn't have been able to "hide" being high/stoned from my parents. Even when I started to smoke weed at 19 years old, a single bowl/just a few tokes would have me totally stoned out of my gourd with red eyes basically the entire day. There's no way I could "hide" that from my parents as a kid. I just can't imagine smoking weed as an 11 to 15 year old.
I'm someone that spent several months researching psychedelics before I ever took my first dose (mushrooms). I just can't imagine blindly taking a drug at such a young age and not knowing anything about the drug or what I was getting myself into. Or how, at that age, I could manage to remain "normal" looking and not high as a kite while at school or at home lol.
I smoked Cannabis for my first time at 18 maybe 19, which was my first "drug" besides alcohol.
Mushrooms and salvia for my first time at 20
LSD and MDMA and mescaline for my first times at 21
DMT (smoked) for my first time around 23-ish

LSD, Shrooms, Ayahuasca at age 43, changed my life completely.
I regret that I did not try psychedelics when I was younger.

The author, Michael Pollan, took a number of different psychedelics as research for his book, How to change your mind.
In it he says that psychedelics are wasted on the young.
I am not sure I agree with him that psychedelics are not beneficial to younger people, but I see what he is getting at. That psychedelics are really useful in breaking the ingrained thinking that naturally happens to all of us as we age. The brain has to filter so much information, to generally let stuff in that will keep us alive. And once these patterns are set, it’s very difficult to formulate new automatic responses to triggers.
Rosalind Watts describes it very well. She describes the brain as a ski slope, where after years of skiing down the slope, you end up with ruts and can go in only one direction. After a psilocybin experience, this ski slope in the brain is effectively wiped clean to leave virgin snow. So next time you meet a trigger, you can now ski any direction down the slope.
I like to use the afterglow to try and formulate new ruts in my brain of happy, positive reactions.

I've had run ins with cocaine and opiates in my teenage years.
These days I switched my occasional opiate binge for kratom. and I drink only when I 'have' too.. just to calm myself down. I take no stimulants, bar mdma once a year.

Taking psychedelics at a young age teaches you all about the game we play. Although a person who had never touched these substances might have a huge blow out of ideas and concepts since they never had done it before. But what to do if you already understand its all a game? I think its better to be ahead of the curve on this issue.

What age is most beneficial to try psychedelics? Just like every trip is different for each individual. So is the age of being introduced to it.
I was a very late entrant into the psychedelic world. There are times I wonder how my life would have been different had I had the experiences earlier in life. But one thing I feel is that for whatever reason, it was perfect for me when I did!
There are no accidents. I'm very grateful NOW, and have no regrets. Well, maybe just a little, but I am where I am now. Nothing can change that.

I'm curious about your "story".
What lead you to becoming open to/interested in and trying things like that so relatively "late" in life? Even alcohol you didn't touch until your mid 30s.
That must've been pretty wild and potentially life changing, having all of those "first experiences" in your mid to late 30s.
