Walk in the woods (Pic heavy)
    #9498242 - 12/26/08 04:25 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Hey guys. So yesterday I got an awesome Nikon d40 for christmas with an awesome extra lense that is very necessary. So today the weather is great and I decided to go with a friend for a walk in the nature reserve near my house.

My new camera:jointsmile:

"Trail Head" I guess

Found this guy first on the ground:

He had long black furs on the top and had pretty small brown pores on the bottom. I'm assuming he's some kind of tree fungi and not the cap of a mushroom from the way it's shaped.

Just some mids but still enjoyable. :bongload:

Some plant bearing blue colored fruit

A trail in the woods

What's this?

Hmmm...

Busted. :sherlock:

Here's what we came to look at. Last year these wood chips produced gymnopilus luteofolius (not sure on species), It's first batch seemed to be inactive, but in the fall it produced active.

Clear mycelium growth

Found this nearby:

It had pores

Here's the tree it was on:

And the leaves found around the tree

Found on the same tree

On our way out

yeah, from what i can deduce, i think you have to force it through the pipe to uhm, mold it into rope. it's more environmentally friendly than using chemicals.

That stuff looks horrible to make rope out of. No long, stringy fibers at all. Only good for burning that is, I wager. Humbug! I'll stick with me' ole nettles for some good rope, aye sir!

That sure is a nice camera and that 55-200 you got to go along with it looks like a decent and versatile piece of glass. I'm sure you'll get some satisfaction out of that kit

Stinging nettle is great for north america. I had a bracelet a while ago, but it became too brittle and broke. I forgot to bring back stinging nettle from Idaho to Texas. Anyone know if Stinging nettle grows natural down in Texas, and if not can you buy seeds?

You can also consume the leaves to help allergies.

I'm not familiar with the distribution of nettles in NA, but the plant favors nitrogen rich soils. I'd be surprised if stinging nettles do not occur in Texas.

Nettle cord can indeed become brittle when dry. For optimum strength, keep it somewhat moist, but make sure it doesn't start to rot.

Stinging nettles are common in spring/summer here in florida so I would assume it is the same for texas. Careful gathering though

I've stepped through a patch of em in flip-flops while I was, erm, 'inebriated'. Too bad I didn't think to wee on my feet, probably would have helped.

Well today we went back for another visit. It's at the point in Texas were it's not sure if it's going to stay cold yet or not.

Me and some friends were hiding but this dog managed to find us (lol the tree he's next to has those two mushrooms I posted earlier on it)

So we soon found ourselves running

This was when we stumbled across a family of vultures. This one was very calm and curious

This one was the top dog

And this one seemed like the odd one out

Eventually the top dog jumped on the tree as we approached and began barking at us

I'm assuming this is their nest, so they're being pretty defensive.

Then another dog found us

So we soon found ourselves running...again

Thanks Cactu.

Oh yeah I made this cool .gif today.

The tree is the same one that the vultures inhabited.

never run from a dog, remember a dog is an animal and animals have instincts...one of those instincts is to chase things that run:lol:

Yeah, my cat just doesn't seem to get that fact.  They lay around each other all day, the dog won't even look up if she saunters by.  But invariably she'll get some wild hair and race past him.  Next thing you know there's an all out war-chase going on around my living room.

That's a pretty trippy GIF.  Is it just 2 shots at slightly different positions cycled? Or is there more to it than that?
