mini-monotub, liquid culture and straw. ?'s
    #9503573 - 12/27/08 05:49 PM (15 years, 2 months ago)

alright so i'm not going for a huge harvest i'm just going for something that is easy to hide and small so i decided to invest in a mini monotub. i don't need the 10 o's that a monotub can produce so i'm going for a smaller scale, i bought a 10 gallon rubbermaid and a panel of led's (there are 4 circles with 3led's each across it) all for a monotub using straw. is it alright to solely use straw and no horsepoop? and if i need poop, i have horses but i can't dry the poop anywhere before i use it, i can pasturise it but i think it needs to be dry first. do i need to use dry horsepoop? or can i just grab some frozen poop out of my field, and boil it at 170?

also i'm trying to make a liquid culture but i heard that using just normal household sugar is not good. is it possible to use sugar? i don't care if it works worse i just need it to work so i can colonise a big jar of rye. (BIG jar) and i might go for 2 of these tubs because i don't expect more than a 1/2 O i would like more but i don't need it, and i think this will give it.
any suggestions

I think the ammonia has to be leeched out of the poop over time, so it's best to use old sundried poop. should smell like dirt or 'earthy'

it doesn't absolutely need to be dry before pasturization, it's going in the water anyway. the  important thing is the age of the poo

there are many teks on using honey + water to make lc.
most call for 1 tsp honey + 100-150 ml of water (tap is fine)

Okay, for a mini mono i would not use just straw.  Straw alone in such a small setup won't maintain proper moisture. Yes you can use frozen poo, just grab the old stuff that has been out there for a while.  Stay away from fresh droppings.  I doesn't have to be dry, just sufficiently leeched by mother nature.  The lc, don't use white sugar, it has almost no nutes, even mushies can't use it.  If you have honey use that.

alright cool i'm probably going to get my sub going tonight and get my colonised cake into it. i'm just worried about contam's inside of a monotub. what are some precautions i should take when dealing with a sub? can i also use verm in the sub? since the only place i can get the hpoo from is in their stall with water, everything else is frozen solid so i'm going to dig. i really thought that it had to be dry.
yeah i have honey and actually right after i posted this i found a honey lc tek, so yeah thanks for the measurements. also i have a syringe that was used for spores and i have washed it out with rubbing alcohol, is that enough to be useable for the lc? i filled the syringe with 10 cc's(as far as the plunger would go) then let it drip out over the needle and then it set for a while. can i just, while the lc is boiling suck it up with the needle then use that to wash out the iso, then just refil up the syringe with boiling honey and water?

how to clean syringes:
http://www.shroomery.org/8403/Psilocybers-Syringe-Tek

LC is generally prepared in a jar, and sucked into the syringe when it's ready.

you can mix verm into your substrate if you want. maybe 1 part verm to 4 or 5 parts poo.

preparing the substrate isn't a super-sterile procedure usually. pasturized it then put it in your clean monotub. squeezing out excess moisture as you go

vermiculite is an awesome addition to any bulk substrate and can be used liberally in amounts up to 50% of the overall bulk sub..  You said you have access to poo and straw.  I would do a 1 part verm to 1 part straw to 2 parts poo.  Unless you also have some coir laying around, then toss that in there too.  The more diverse nutes, the better.  For some reason mycelium just seems to tear through coir.  With the addition of straw, it is best to shred it.
