What's wrong with my speakers?
    #949909 - 10/10/02 02:53 PM (21 years, 6 months ago)

My comp speakers stopped working. There is nothing wrong with the speakers themselves, because I hooked up my old pair and they didn't work either. I don't have the mute activated, at least not that I can see. Did I fuck up and delete a driver or something? I doubt that I did, but I can't figure out why no sound comes out. Can someone here give me a hand with this?

It's been 2 weeks. Rebooting doesn't cut it.

damn, if you had 95 or 98 i'd be your man...

Look in your control panel for sound or devices or anything to do with your sound card.. see if you can remomve the sound card somehow... sorry i'm not much help here.. in win 98 you'd go ... right click on my computer, then go properties and delete sound driver from the " device manager " screen.

in XP tho.. ??? double click on your volume icon next to the clock on the bottom right hand corner of your screen, make sure you are not on mute and that the volume is high enough.

good luck

It really sounds like a corupt driver... if the conections are all good... this is fairly common- it has happen to me a few times....

You have XP? (Win 98/ME need to first go to SAFEMODE before doing this)

Ok- Go to desktop- Right click on MY COMPUTER/left click on properties/within next window click on the HARDWARE TAB/Then click on Device Manager button/In the list of hardware scroll down till you see SOUND, VIDEO and GAME CONTROLLERS- (Look for any "X" "!" or "?" near this icon- if none there proceded) Click on the plus next to this icon- Now you want to look for ANY drivers related to AUDIO- right click on them one at a time- if possible REMOVE them- If it dosent allow that try "update driver"- It's best to remove all the drivers in this catorgory- cuz sometimes a game controller driver (for ex) CAN effect audio sometimes... After done, click ok/close device manager/Reboot system. The system will take longer to reboot and it SHOULD detect the hardware and install the drivers automaticly- It might prompt you with a wizzard- usally keep clicking "Next" will work-

If you have any probs- feel free to pm me.

Main problem here with Win 98/ME- is that if one dosent first go to safe mode, that sometimes there are "ghost drivers" (where Window's plug n play feature keeps reinstalling same driver over and over) that are often not visable in regular Windows mode- By first going to safemod then device manager (for EX:) one might see 12 monitor drivers.. where in regular Windows mode they only see one monitor driver.... WinXP does not seem to have ANY problem with "ghost drivers" (that im aware of) - and thus no need to go to safe mode before running device manager with WinXP.

Yea they just stuck the device manager at another location. First click on the hardware tab- the device manager is a BUTTON (1/2 way down in the hardware window) in WinXP- It works the same way as in 98/ME otherwise.
