I figured that this would be better than a new thread every time one of us gets a pack.
I just picked up a Gregory Z55.

3660 in3 at 3lbs 8 oz.
Doesn't seem too bad. I'm used to an army rucksack so it's nice to carry something comfortable and convenient for a change.

Gregory makes a great pack. I've been using the Gregory Shasta for over 10 years. Its not a lightweight option, but I never wanted to go ultralight with my gear anyway. I like to pack along my creature comforts, and I don't mind a 50lb pack on an extended trip. I usually carry about 40-50 lbs for any trip more then a week. The Shasta is roomy enough to carry all my gear without having to try to pack it like a puzzle box (somewhere around 5000-5500 cu in). And it is extremely comfortable and carries the load well where you need it (your hips, not your shoulders).

Last year I purchased a Lowe Alpine Contour 60 +10 70 L / 4300 cu 4 lbs 4oz

I went into a great local outfitting shop back on the mainland. (All we have here is Sports Authorty )
The store has pre-weighted shaped bags to "fill up" the pack in the store. I walked all over the shop with 3 different branded packs fully loaded. In that manner I decided that the Lowe Alpine pack fit the best. I remember trying an ArcTeryx and a Gregory pack, too. The sales guy was very very friendly and knowledgeable and did not mind at all loading & unloading all those packs for me. I also picked up a Granite Gear pack-cover made from a super-light waterproof nylon fabric that wads up into its own little baggie. Sweet!
Edit: And my wife wants me to add in this.... she uses a North Face Crestone 60

Thats cool that they had that option for you. I did something similar when I was pack shopping. I picked out the packs I wanted to try and then I just loaded them up with coils of climbing ropes and then walked around. I was at REI and they were more then happy to let me do it. Even had some fairly knowledgeable guy in the store helping me figure out the right size pack and everything (they had this cool little gadget to measure your back, kinda like the tool they use at shoestores to measure your feet).
Funny part was after I figured out which pack I wanted I thanked them and left, then went home and bought it on-line for much less then they would offer!

Those Arc'Teryx packs seem pretty sick. I've heard nothing but good reviews about them, even keeping things dry in a rainforest. I was looking at them before, a little pricey for me.. but well worth it from what I've read and heard. It's probably got the most solid construction of any pack on the market, those things are waterproof and bombproof.
Enjoy Patagonia

I went into the gear shop *ready and willing* to lay down cash for an ArcTeryx, but I did not like how it felt on my shoulders. Despite making a number of adjustments, I couldn't get it to feel comfortable. I'm glad I didn't just buy one online!

Yeah, I tried one as well and it just didn't sit right. It could have been the wrong size though.. It was out of my price range anyway.. I was looking to lay down 200-250 and that thing was 420. I really love my Granite Gear though.. it's comfortable as hell, has an awesome suspension system. Probably the most comfortable pack I've tried.

It seems to be more important to get a pack that feels good.. than just one that cost more.. I'm just lucky that my birthday is a month before Christmas and the money came just in time!

North Face Solaris 35L
Good for a couple days out. I've used it in the grand canyon, and it beats the regular backpack I had! Ab strap and back vent are KEY. Kinda pricey tho

So I took my granite gear pack (see above post) for a test-drive over the long weekend to Olympic National Park in WA. A couple complaints:
The waist-strap does not cinch down tight enough (I have a 30" waist), so I ended up carrying most of the weight on my shoulders and back, which hurt like hell. If you have a small waist, you're going to have to modify the straps somehow to fit properly.
There is just one large compartment. While this allows the pack to be so light, it's also a pain in the ass to dig out your gear. You need to be strategic about the order you pack everything in, and perhaps ziplock bags to keep your smaller stuff together.
Otherwise it's a great pack, with a very clever strap system and super light weight.

That's why I opted for the nimbus meridian.. while it's bigger than the Vapor Trail.. it also has a better waist strap I believe. Also, you did not get the proper size waist belt it seems.. if it has the same suspension as the nimbus.. which I think it does... all the straps are replaceable and interchangable, including the belt strap. If it's relatively new, try taking it into the outfitter and seeing if they won't let you exchange it for a smaller waist strap.
As for the pockets, yeah.. one compartment can make it a pain to organize. That's another reason I went for the nimbus, it has a top compartment/pouch. But one main compartment and a big pouch wasn't enough for me.. I like multiple ways to organize my stuff, especially all the little things.
Luckily, Granite Gear offers tons of options for customizing your pack and adding components. You can purchase a "lid" for the vapor trail separately - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/accessdetail.cfm/GG350 It's not a big lid like the nimbus has, but it's a decent place to store small items.
Also.. you can purchase Pack Pockets, Belt Pockets, Shoulder Pockets.. I got two Large Armored pockets, they strap right on to the side of your pack via the compression straps... added another 660 cubic inches to my pack for 7.4 oz. Armor Pockets - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/accessdetail.cfm/GG2075 Belt Pocket - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/accessdetail.cfm/GG1012 Shoulder strap pocket - http://www.backcountrygear.com/catalog/accessdetail.cfm/GG1013

You're right Shroomism, the belt is interchangeable. I didn't notice that when I got it at REI. I'm going in tomorrow to swap it out. Thanks for pointing that out. *props*

Woot. That's one of the amazing things about GG packs, their suspension system is amazing. Most packs have very limited adjustments, and a lot of them you can't even replace the waist belt even if you wanted to. These packs are super adjustable, just take a look at the shoulders strap adjustments... and both shoulder and waist straps are completely removable all you need is a screwdriver.
See if they have any side pockets for it too.. I'm really glad I got mine.. makes it a lot easier to organize stuff. Especially all my little things.. like first aid kit, survival kit, fishing kit.. I have lots of little "kits" and other stuff I need easy access to and those side pockets make it soo much easier than stuffing everything into one giant compartment. So all my big stuff goes in the main chute and most of my little stuff stays within easy access.

I have a Jansport Carson 90 for long back country trips. It's a bit overkill for short camping trips but great for the really long ones. Also have a Big Horn backpack by Fieldline for short weekend trips and for hunting. Has a detachable waist pack with two bottle holders. Both have hydration pockets.
