HA! Tested again today and picked up a kickass signal, totally open. Turned out to be an ISP offering wireless service. Got the MAC address of the router I linked on to and called the manufacturer (looked up at http://coffer.com/mac_find/) to see if they could tell me what equipment it was exactly. All they could tell from the mac address was that it was an industrial wireless router. Industrial was right, I was getting a strong signal with at least a one mile radius.

I'm not sure what the laws are in my area about just finding a signal and who owns it and contacting them, possibly making money by fixing it for them even after they consent, but I see money in it. Just cruise around, find an open signal and contact the person or business. They will want it fixed. No doubt.

hehe, i have friends who do that, drive around the city, load up airsnort, and capture data...
i believe there is also something called warchalking, not sure how popular it is around the world, but if you look on google or something, people write on sidewalks WAP points and stuff in front of vulnerable buildings... pretty funny... Ive seen a couple of points in Boston, MA when i went there on vacation one time... couple were in front of MIT and stuff, loaded up snort, captured some packets and reconstructed them when i got back to the hotel, and captured some email and stuff... browsed around a couple of computers too, its fun, yet very risky if you get caught... companies are starting to realize how much of a risk it is, and will kick your azz if they catch you outside breaking into their systems.

Yeah! We were using Etherpeek for packet sniffing and could watch people checking email, browsing, looking at porn.

If I saw heat I'd bolt but we just do it from inside the car usually. This one crazy bastard will get out and walk around, probably looking loony as hell but it causes attention so I won't have a part of it.

I'd really like to find out legal repurcussions ahead of time. In my opinion, it's floating thru the air but that doesn't mean it's not against the law in some way.

It's not really that hard. A decent grasp of Windows operating systems is good cuz that's what most of the systems you'll be jacking into use. So read up on file sharing basics and exploits for sure. This kind of stuff can be practiced on any network. Learn about 802.11b wireless protocol too.
Next, search some war driving links on the internet. A quick search for 'war driving' in yahoo search engine brought up:

http://www.wardriving.com/
http://online.securityfocus.com/news/192
http://www.pasadena.net/vacation/
http://www.nwfusion.com/columnists/2002/0902schwartau.html

There are a ton of links on the subject. You should also get a couple wireless access points, the more common and cheap the better, that will be what people use most and you will learn the default system passwords (that rarely get changed) and how to navigate thru the menus. Try DLINK and Linksys ...

It's really not that hard and once you jack into a network or two, you're hooked!
