depends on where you are. If your area has a lot of shroom activity then yes.The dogs are probably trained to find any drugs they locally have problems with.

Dogs are great for sniffing stuff out...
Let a good one sniff the seat of a car 15 minutes after someone has run and they can follow the smell and find you.
I duno if they do train dogs to smell mushrooms or not, but if I were a cop I would...

so far we've heard a lot of wild speculation.....so here's mine....
i would imagine that dogs aren't trained to detect psilocybin mushrooms. i think these for two reasons..
A ) shrooms aren't that big of a problem drug. they aren't top priority for cops.
B) how would you differentiate between psilocybin shrooms and culinary varieties?

I took a criminal study class and they brought a drug dog in one day and had it find some cloth that was rubbed in marijuana. He found that shit fast. He had a kid hide it too.
The dope stealer said that they train there dogs for the big 3; marijuana, coke, and heroin.
Althought they could train the dogs to smell mushrooms no problem, i think they have dogs that they use to hunt for mushrooms. I just dont think they do often.

good question. wish you had gotten a btter answer, more definitive, i mean. has anyone ever gotten busted by the smell of dried shrooms? i dont know of anyone.
i think that training a dog to smell shrooms wouldnt work. too many musjrooms to distinguish, the dog would freak on boletes. just my opinion.

If anybody out there thinks that dogs can't smell shrooms, check this out: www.co.stearns.mn.us/departments/sheriff/safety/k9.htm
Never under-estimate canine intelligence and sense of smell. Individual dogs can be trained to "hit" on dozens of different scents. All the trainer has to do is condition a dog to sit when they smell one of the targeted scents.
I'm a Minnesota boy born and raised and I know damn well that mushrooms are not a priority for MN law enforcement. The fact the dog in the link above is trained to hit on shrooms leads me to believe that it is part of basic training for all drug K9's.

The county next to the one I live in recently approved the use of drug K9's to randomly sweep the parking lots of local retailers and restaraunts. The Man takes his Beast out to the local K-Mart, Perkins, etc to search for needles in haystacks at great cost to the taxpayer. Little or no return is made on this investment. Because I live in a very, VERY mormon community, I took it upon myself to load up a Super-Soaker with bong water and drive slowly through the church parking lots- methodically spritzing each car with wong bater :-) Hopefully at least one of the "Holier than thou" supporters of this fascist policy will find out what it is like to be hassled, interrogated, threatened, etc.

I can tell you that the Canadian Customs dogs are not trained to sniff for any type of mushroom. They are trained to search for marijuana, cocaine, heroine, and firearms (they can smell the gunpowder and/or gun oil).
I would imagine that the US Customs dogs are trained the same (actually, a lot are trained up here in Canada). There are just way too many types of mushrooms, and it's not a big enough problem for the police to train the dogs to search for it.
Also, in the article "Police seize mushrooms in drug bust" it mentions that police dogs found some illegal mushrooms, but only because the sniffed out his weed pipes that were stored with the mushrooms. So if you want to hide shrooms from the police, don't keep them with your weed!

In reply to:
Murphy is trained to detect marijuana, cocaine, crack cocaine, methamphetamines, heroin, LSD, psilocybin mushrooms and more.
LSD is odorless, tasteless, and completely undetectable.

i know LSD is colorless, tasteless, and undetectable to humans, but i wasn't sure about dogs... so i went looking on Google. I found some sites claiming that dogs can detect LSD, but they were all trying to sell drug dogs. i couldn't find any reliable source.

... all the mushrooms tend to have the same active chemical, so really a dog trained to smell just Psilocybin and Psilocin (if possible) would detect pretty much every type of magic mushroom out there.

As long as it is not odorless, dogs can be trained to detect it. I'm not sure that many dogs have been trained to do this, but it CAN be done...

Come on use your head. Dogs cannot detect lsd. If they could, I really doubt they could detect anything under a milligram (which I might add is a bunch of lsd)

I have a friend who is a K-9 officer for our local police department. I am gonna try asking him and then going over to his house (where he keeps the dog) with a pocket full of mushrooms to see if I get a response. Don't worry, he won't arrest me .

It is now confirmed through both asking a k9 officer and by testing it with the dog that my local drug dog cannot smell shrooms. I tested it with both fresh and dried shrooms and the dog didn't smell a damn thing.

Here's my theory on lsd/mushroom sniffing dogs. When they are trained, they can probably detect the scent of the handler or whoever hid the drugs and hit on that. Since no one has come up with a refrence that details a drug dog hitting on lsd or mushrooms (cept with pot pipe) in the field, it looks like those handlers and trainers are full of shit. I could be wrong, but I could be right!

I wanted to resurrect this.
Yes, drug dogs can sniff out mushrooms. They will detect and hit on stuff that smells like mushrooms? Why? Their owners delight when they find mushrooms and reward them. The dogs aren't stupid and work for their owners.
A car was hit on because of the latent smell of mushrooms. Active ones. And said car was searched. The dog hit on the mushroom smell dead on and without hesitation accurate within inches.
Vacuum seal that goodness up boys and girls.

Dogs can absolutely be trained to smell distinct varieties of fungi. Dogs are becoming popular for hunting Oregon Truffles (underground and among other fungi all over the place!) as they gain in popularity on the world market.
The "drug-dogs" in K9 units typically will hit on something whenever they are signaled to by their handlers, or when they smell something they're trained to smell. It'll depend where you are for what they'll hit on, but meth, coke, pot, and heroin are most likely. That said, you won't often see customs officers using German Shepherds to sniff out drugs. Shepherds are used more so for intimidation factor so pigs can see when their prey (us) are worried where the dogs are, then signal them to "hit".
Customs officials (not border patrol,) use scent-hounds like beagles to search baggage for hundreds of different things, but that's pretty much ALL they're used for, and likely they'll bring in specially trained dogs for specifically expected contraband. They also can smell money.

To everyone saying there are too many different types of mushies for the dog to distinguish.... It's not the shroom itself the dog is trained to smell for it's the psilocin that they can pick out in the magic variety. Dogs don't work like us, where if you put a bag of herb in coffee can with gas as an additional masking agent, we as humans smell the coffee or gas because it's stronger the dog can smell the coffee the gas the herb and whatever else you touched while touching those items. That is the reason most people fail when hiding drugs in their vehicle when it comes to K9 searches. It all depends on the department or state in which the k9 unit is in to decide what the dogs get trained for. Oh and by the way dogs can be trained to sniff out morels very easily I now know several people with morel dogs.

I would bet that yes, dogs can detect LSD. If not the actual drug itself, probably one of the associated chemicals. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=AgkNiFxEtEOhVmxxzRwOiqLsy6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20090203203250AAZYRd7 This of course would require special training for the pup.
