This was a very nice side by side comparison. I think I'm going to give the malt extract and dextrose combo a try tomorrow, thanks for the info...

It's been about 10 days now.

The Lme/Dex jar is over 90% colonized.

The Sugar in the RAW is around 50%

Confectionary is about 20-25%

The Karo and Table Sugar's are around 10-15% and have not seemed to grow much in the last few days.

So based on my initial finding I would suggest using Sugar in the Raw over karo. It's about the same price and easier to measure and works much better.

If you can afford to order the Lme/Dex, DO IT! :-D

Weird, and how long have I been preaching about using light malt powder?
Reminds me of a thread I started the other day where I was wondering what people were using

The results speak for themselves :-D

Maybe I should try it again using a 2% sugar solution.  Could be OD'ing on the sugar.

just use straight malt. .5-2 grams per 500ml. It isnt rocket science

Cool. Thanks for the update!
If you don't mind me adding, I didn't notice a difference in my LC's (stirred and unstirred). They were both shaken after PCing and had no GE.

By % colonized do you mean the approximate "volume" of the mycelium at rest in proportion to the total liquid?  Some updated pictures would be neat

90% sounds thick!  I have a Karo one going on 10 days as well and it's probably 15% and doesn't look like it will go much further.  I'd like to try some turbinado next and will probably attempt some lme/dex when I buy some malt for an agar recipe.

Have you tried inoculating some test jars with these to see how they perform on a grain medium? (and also to make sure none of that growth is from contams?)

I have not tested these yet but I will use them.  They all look pretty normal except the powdered confectionery sugar LC. It's pretty cloudy.

It was cloudy right after PC'ing though, so I attributed as a byproduct of the sugar.

The %'s are approximate volumes.  The Karo and table sugar have lots of little puff balls of mycelium. Sometimes they'll settle and appear as one large ball but after swirling they come apart again.

The lme/dex is just filled up damn near to the top.  Big masses/chunks of mycelium that all form into a big blob.  The last LC I made like this I had to spend a couple minutes sucking in air/water and blowing it back into the masses to break them up so I could draw them out with my 18g needle.

Just a little update.  The lme/dex jar is almost one giant blob now and has actually started to colonize the surface with nice white mycelium. I thought it was contaminated for a sec.

Ok, here's the final results.  It's now Day 18.

Jars #2 through 5 have not shown any growth in over a week.

Jar #1 (lme/dex) has continued to grow.  Not only colonizing virtually the entire liquid but also the surface and then attempting to grow up the side of the jar too.

Jar #1 - LME / Dex

Jar #2 - Sugar in the Raw

Jar #3 - Powdered Confectionery Sugar (love this shiat in my coffee now)

Jar #4 - Karo

Jar #5 - Table Sugar

The clear winner here is lme/dex but the RAW is a close close second.
Not as much growth but still it did very well and it's also much cheaper and easier to do for newbs. It's cheap, easy to find and already premeasured so it's pretty hard to screw that up.

I'll be re-writing this up in a single post in my journal.

cool experiment. last time i had mycelium grow on the surface and sides of the jar, it soon turned green. but that was only after i had already used some for a couple jars, so i may have introduced the contaminant myself. then again, all 3 jars contaminated. could have been because the wbs was too wet or because of the lc. hope you have better luck.

i thought karo was corn sugar? theres obviously a difference that im missing.

i used honey when i tried to make an LC...and failed. But i saw plenty of honey teks on here that worked?i dunno.

I didn't have any honey and forgot to buy some is all.

I believe the reason it grew on the surface is because the mycelial mass grew up to the surface.  I had it happen in 3 other lme/dex jars too. I used up almost that whole jar of lme/dex tonight.

https://files.shroomery.org/files/09-002/172933981-PE---Start-Shelf.jpg

And filled up a syringe for later use.
