How do i get rid of my ego
    #948670 - 10/10/02 09:01 AM (15 years, 1 month ago)

How do i rid myself of my ego? I find it getting in the way of my life, being offended at little things.

Ask yourself what exactly bothers you and then think about why it bothers you.

Example:

hmm I noticed that my boss said something about me spending too much time at the water cooler in the meeting.  That really upset me.  Why did that upset me?  Well, for one thing it embarassed me.  Why did it embarass me?  Because I want people to think good things about me and the way the boss said it it made me seem like a slacker.  Why do I want to people to think good things about me?  Because everybody wants to be liked.  But if I am a genuinely nice person people who are in tune will see that and not let the bosses words affect their opinion of me.  Ahhhh I get it.  Now I am at peace. (even if I am a little thirsty)

Cheers,

The ego is one's center of conscious awareness. One does not want to get rid of one's ego, even though lots of people express it this way. One wants to get rid of one's ego-defenses. This is the psychic armoring that we wrongly identify with. Our personas, roles, various social selves. At the center of our sense of identity is our 'transcendental ego, ' This is usually identified as our true Self, or Spiritual Self, or "Inner Man" (St. Paul's term).

In the East, the annihilation of the ego has to do with the disidentification with the temporary, ever-changing masks that we wrongly identify as 'myself.' The mistranslation of ego-annihilation, in Western minds sometimes results in people burning out or damaging the systems that permit that 'field-effect' called self-awareness or ego to exist. A healthy and resilient ego is necessary for the transcendence - rising above - of the false 'egos' or selves that we wrongly identify with. We are no more those selves than we are the clothes we wear and take off, yet look how kids and shallow adults actually DO identify with the clothes, cars and houses that they enclose their bodies in.

Just read my posts and when they no longer bother you, you have arrived. I allow people to practice daily, but instead they would rather reinforce irritation while merely talking about spiritual advancement.

Personally this whole movement to rid youself of the ego is hogwash if you ask me (oh you didn't ask......I'm telling you anyway

I think the ego has fantastic possibilities and can be of compassion and progress and science and love. The problem is in the trappings of the ego when we become self centered and place ourselves before others in all instances.

I suspect this is what you might have been saying

A humble thank you. I think Western misunderstanding of Eastern thought is more dangerous than taking too much psychedelic. We are different somehow in our psychic makeup, and do not assimilate Eastern psychology easily - acid-indigestion!   'Lotuses' do not grow well in the Western psyche, as I believe 'Roses' do not take to the Eastern psyche. Few people 'hybridize' philosophies sucessfully.

How do i rid myself of my ego?

You could start with 150mg of Salvia 5x.

But to taste true egolessness would take quite a while longer.

the first step: realizing that you are no more (or less) the center of the universe than any other sentient being...
