Therere dogs (and pigs) which are trained to sniff out truffles, and that is some type of underground fungus related to a mushroom, so Im sure they could.

dogs are trained to sniff anything that can be sniffed ... they're a very valuble to the goverment. in highschool they had random drug sweeps ... the boys in blue would show up out of nowhere outside your class ... escort you out ... they class was searched. people would get in trouble for aspirin pills.

You're right, shrooms have a powerful odor that can easily be recognized by drug-sniffing drugs. I think the consensus, though, is that drug dogs are rarely trained for that particular application.

i still can't believe that some of you get random drug sweeps in school.
i'm assuming its in the usa. its a sorry state of affairs when a government is doing that to kids.

i heard that unless dogs where specifically trained for finding magic mushrooms then they cant tell the difference between normal and magic.
the government in britain is pretty lax with drugs compared to the usa. so are our schools. people used to get caught with MJ in my old highschool all the time and we used to get sent home and suspended for a bit. but in the end they didnt even do that.

they'd have to be trained for psilocybin, and that's not very hard, since they can smell something like 400 times more accurately than we can? I'm sure they can smell specific chemicals

It is lead to believe that dogs can even sniff out some forms of cancer... So I'm sure they could distinguish shrooms if they were trained for them... Anything you can smell and the thousands of things you cant smell, dogs can be trained to find.

Multiply how well you can smell by 10,000. They can even tell how long you've been in a certain room.

I train and compete with Schutzhund and French Ring sport dogs. This training specializes in Protection/obediance/ tracking but NOT narcotics so I can't say I am 100% sure of this. That being said, the only drugs I have ever heard of Narcotics certified dogs being trained specifically to (as well as the only psuedo-drugs most supply houses sell) are Marijuana, Cocaine, Heroine, LSD, and Meth. Now these are the scents they are trained to alert on, they WILL alert to related scents as well. Dogs that would definatly 100% alert to mushrooms are all Customs trained dogs, as these dogs are trained not only to alert on narcotic oders but on organic oders as well (for example produce or animals being smuggled). Police K-9 are very rarely trained for organic oders, it would provide to many false alerts in most search situations outside airports. So... I guess the answer to your question is it depends on what kind of search you are asking about.
