Beautiful blades, isn't obsidian sharper than metal?

Yes. It can be knapped to be sharper than a surgical scalpel.

I've always wondered. How do you actually attach the obsidian to the handle? Are you only using sinew? It doesn't seem like it would be strong enough for any serious cutting.

Knives like that were used to cut food, skins, butcher animals, carve things, too much pressure downward pressure and the edge breaks.

Yes, I've knapped and worked with obsidian while practicing wilderness survival.
Sinew still doesn't seem like it would be secure enough, but maybe I am just mistaken.

Those obsidian knifes should have pine sap glue in the antler slots, as well as thoroughly soaking and encompassing the wrap. ...or they are gonna rattle loose with a little wear and tear.

Or you can cheat and use epoxy. Not that I ever cheated at anything in my life...

anyway; soaked and prestretched sinew can dry to a very tight fit. rawhide can do similarly well. you do have to thoroughly waterproof it though, it it'll stretch back out when it absorbs moisture.

these were my knives(all sold) and i use epoxy to glue them into the slots carved out. i then use synthetic sinew to wrap the contact area. this is the way most knappers do it these days, for practicality and time saving. the traditional way was to use pine sap, deer shit, and charcoal all ground up and melted into a paste which is then wrapped around a stick to be stored as a glue stick. the sinew was then actually needed to keep the glue from falling apart. i'll be making them both ways from now on, with the sap glue commanding a higher price. i doubt i'll use real sinew ever though.

I just picked up a couple more Mora knives

If you don't have one I highly recommend. Cheap knives, $10-15 but the quality is fucking incredible.
Scandi edge carbon steel blades, very good for general tasks, stay sharp as a motherfucker, and you don't mind really using them because they are so cheap, but also extremely durable.

Seriously $15. Awesome all purpose knives

spending big money on a knife is silly IMO.

The most I've ever spent on a knife is ~100 on my Fallkniven F1, and it was worth every penny.
It's my primary carry in the wilderness and moras are my backup, but shit.. I usually end up using the mora more often.

That CRTK fixy is cool. I do not like the CRTK folders though. They have this secondary lock mechanism that is annoying as fuck.

I just got back from my trip. At the beginning I was worried about the size of the kabar being overkill, but it was worth every inch and the 70 bucks I paid for it. I was able to cut down long branches for the fire the width of baseball bats quickly and easily. I ate with it and used it for numerous things. It was so useful. On a lot of forums I heard people t talking down large fixed blades for survival/bush/campcraft applications but I wouldnt want anything less than a kabar as my primary field knife.

This thing rocks.

Ya Kabars are beast. A good 7-9" fixed blade is good for certain tasks.. mainly splicing wood and branches and whatnot like you said.
I think some of the hardcore bushcraft people don't like them mainly due to the sheer size/weight, as with a good smaller bushcraft/survival knife you can do pretty much everything.
My F1 only has a 4" blade, but it's thick as hell (4.5mm) and VG10 laminated steel, full tang.. it slices through wood like butter
For thicker wood I always carry a Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe and a Sven Folding Saw..
Between those three tools I can process wood like no other. Axe is awesome for processing wood with way less effort than a knife.

But yeah, each different tool excels in different areas and has their place for certain applications.
I certainly won't knock a kabar as a knife is a knife pretty much, and they can do some hefty tasks.
Me personally, for processing wood I'll take my axe and saw over a knife any day just due to the sheer ease,
but my survival blade is freaking awesome for splitting wood as well, even with only a 4" blade

I like the Swedish Mora knives as my toolbox/ field knife. I like the Kershaw American made Ken Onion Leek as my pocket knife.  And I have one of Passifloracaerulea's blades that I use for sacrificial blood letting ceremonies.

get what feels right for you...

By skill: I could be a scoutmaster.
But I never made it past Star, scoutmaster was a dick.

When looking for a good knife, rank means nothing compared to knowledge, and it's really all about what feels right. Didn't you learn that in scouts? :p
