Where did you get the NK bayonet....?  I have a handful of Romanians.  I got them in a lot and they were cheap as fuck.  Why doesn't your AK have a threaded barrel?

This has been my only non-kitchen blade for going on 12+ years:

I've used it to shave twice in the past few weeks when I didn't have a razor.  I have a German straight razor but for some reason it won't take a shaving edge...

I was carrying around a BOX CUTTER everyday allday since last December (2010).  It was for work since I would always have to cut something up or open at least once during the course of the day.  But also Since I had to take the Richmond BART to Downtown Oakland I needed something for protection.

All three are Winchester knives, the folding one is my everyday guy and I don't carry the big one unless i'm deep in bear country.

After careful consideration my new bush knife is a heavy butcher knife from the kitchen.

its at least 90% as good as the most popular large bush knives such as; cold steel trailmaster, ontario marine raider, kabar BK9  etc.

IMO the kabar BK9 is just an overpriced, glorified butcher knife.

butcher knives are cheeeeeeap especially second hand, and many have thick blades with high carbon steel.

i found it very interesting when i later read that prior to the 1900's most everyone used a butcher knife for out in the bush.  a common name is "trade knives."

on anothet note, i have decided that large knived are the most versatile bush tools for the weight.

an axe and small knife are a close second, heres how i figure;

big knife can do anything a small one can for survival.

big knife can chop and split adequately, albeit not as well as an axe, but still well enough.

big knife is lighter.

big knife is better for defense against wild animals, and can make a formidable spear.

i think a big knife + portable saw is an awesome bush combo thats very hard to beat for versatility and weight.

PS i think proper kukris are extremely good bush knives, maybe the best.  im thinking of getting one... from nepal, all of the domestic ones are either low quality or way overpriced.

i like how they have small knife, sharpener, and often flint built into the sheath... whole package.

When I was in Australia some locals took me pig hunting.  They run the wild pigs down with dogs and then kill the pig with a knife to the heart.  All of the guys who did this used their wives old kitchen knives as their weapon of choice to kill the pig.  They would just sharpen both sides of the blade so it was like a stiletto and then shove all 10-12 inches up under the pigs haunches into the heart, give it a little twist, and just hold on while the pig bled out.  Pretty gory, but very effective.

My point, an old kitchen knife works fine for many applications.

BUMP!

I got this set at a pawn shop for 30 bucks. The blade emblem reads "Cobra, Hunter II" and the other side of the blade reads "Brasil" I can't find much about em, but I like the weight of the big one, it has good swing momentum. The paint job on the sheath is my own doing, based on Navajo bead work.

Indeed they do. The only problem with most kitchen knives is they fall apart pretty quickly when subjected to too much abuse.

"that's not a knife. this is a knife."

didn't take a picture of the sheath, but it's awesome. since the blade is curved, the knife naturally locks into it. to release it, you just pull the handle back and the angle's just right. my dad found it years ago hidden away in an abandoned sailboat that was going to be destroyed. he gave it to me. my prized possession. it's handmade and solid. it's got some characters inscribed into the handle and sheath. i'm not sure of the language.

I'm gonna assume that no bear/animal is going to fuck with you in the woods...especially since you have the chinese throwing star

My Wilkinson, believe it's 1917, Cavalry Officer's Blade. Just researching reconditioning etc, want to get it gleaming. Scabbard is all original leather, with all straps in tact, a lovely thing to hold.

Any idea what that shape/type of knife is called?

Way back in the day, when I was a teen, I used to play Everquest and they had weapons like this.  Not long after, I went to a market somewhere and saw one but didn't have a chance to check it out.

I've always wanted one.
