And its a freaking beauty! I just love the designs of old machinery like that, I bet it shakes the ground something fierce.. Is that a 75lb? I would kill to get playtime on something like that beast!

That’s what I love so much about forging! Want that tentacle knife you thought up for the shop grill set? No problem, a scrap piece of coil spring is all you need. There’s not much you can’t do with a regular old 3lb hammer and a bunch of sweat, but a power hammer sure would save the arms...

I'm no blacksmith, but I've gotten to use those power hammers/hydraulic presses...not real sure if there's a technical difference there... but anyway, good times.
Nothing like hammering it out yourself though. My brother's a blacksmith, and I get to dabble when I visit.

I’m jealous, I still haven’t had the opportunity try either a press or a power hammer though I would really like to. Hydraulic presses are better for knife making and Damascus, more control as far as I understand, power hammers are really good at moving a lot of metal or large pieces. I don’t really know what I’m talking about but they both look fun!
I agree, it is pretty satisfying to whale on a chunk of steel, something kind of primal about it and its good at alleviating frustration. I don’t have my own set up either but I have a good friend with a small anvil and a gas forge and we often hangout after work getting stoned and making shit. Metal is a lot like clay when it gets hot, its like play-doh for grown-ups!

Yeah it feels natural, or primal as you put it. I do a little flint knapping, and it's the same feeling...satisfying, and soothing. It feels right.

I’ll have to give flint knapping a try some time, I can see how that could be satisfying though it looks difficult. Give a man a tool and he soon forgets how to use a stone.. Do you have any pics of any of your work so far?
I feel you about being in the wrong time. Man has been hunting food and forming raw materials into tools for far far longer than we have been mashing letters into keyboards. Why did I choose to be born in this century!?

I still have a ways to go, but I have the basics down.

Wow, those are dope man! They look sharp and fucking deadly! That first one is so slender and delicate looking, it must be nerve-racking when you get close to finishing a piece like that. I imagine you must get to know the material you’re working with really well and almost feel its grain to be able to get it so fine. Where do you get your flint from? Are there places online to order it?

You can order material online, but it's everywhere where I live....although it's hard to come across quality stuff like the piece in the first photo,...that's the nicest stuff I've found so far, and was really easy to work with.
Some needs to be best treated before knapping, but I've never gotten that far.

Even cooler that your working with material that you found in nature.. Ive found a few smaller broken tips, scrapers, etc around where I live but have never seen any larger chunks of flint. Not sure I’d recognize it as such even if I did though. Have you ever tried to make a knapped knife?

Finally got a L Insingo to go along with the small. Still prefer the small tbh. The size difference doesn't seem like much in a picture, but feels very different in the hand

Those are pretty nice!
I’ve heard the term “bank vault smooth” used to describe Sebenzas.
I’ve never been fortunate enough to handle one.

Nice! I miss this thread. I've been using the absolute shit out of my Victorinox Huntsman. Arguably my default EDC for the last several months, even with the Benchmade.
