Cold Steel G.I. tanto tactical fixed blade
7 inch one piece solid slab of 1055 high carbon steel
I keep this out in my toolbox in my garage for chopping, slicing and stabbing random shit around the garage and yard, sometimes I bring it with me out to my mailbox and open mail with it

Found a great new area for walking my dog which has a lot of overgrown paths, so I nipped across the road to an Army surplus store to see if they had a macete. Low and behold, 44 bucks!!

I'll be putting it to the test once it stops raining, but initial impressions seem good, especially for the price!!

Nice. A good machete is always a handy tool to have. SOG makes quality equipment.
I have a SOG knife that I've carried for years, it's retired now days as I don't carry this one anymore.

I've got a SOG fixed blade but have never messed with one of their folders. I've heard people complain/joke about "SOG blade wobble" in their folders.
Do you find this to be true?

I've got a wobbly sog. Was my EDC for a few years. I liked it a lot but it did have that wobble which could be unnerving with aggressive use (impatient fucker). Had a weak moment, busted a nut on a Microtech, no more wobble.

I have a Snaggletooth MF mod on the way right now for my tanto Recon 1. I'm getting a custom deep carry titanium clip from popscustomclips on Etsy for my tanto Recon 1 pretty soon
CPM - S35VN blade (4 inch) with DLC coating G-10 handle TRI AD lock

I'm very much contemplating one of these with the snaggletooth mod since you mentioned it. My only qualm is that it seems to be a little too big to comfortably carry in ones jeans pocket.
Whatcha reckon MW? Is it a little on the large side?
What about build and action quality? Reviews suggest it's a little stiff on opening...

It is very much a large knife and was somewhat uncomfortable to carry when I first got it. I got used to it though and it doesn't bother me anymore. I think you would be really happy with a Recon 1. Yes all the TRI AD locks are hella stiff when you first get them, they break in after time and get smooth as butter. You have to get a Cold Steel folder in your hands and feel the strength of the TRI AD lock.
If you're worried about the size being a comfort issue, there's other Cold Steel knives that might be more what you're looking for, they're awesome knives. You could check out the American Lawman or the Code 4. I believe SnaggletoothMF sells both of them on his site and both knives can be "toothed"
I'll try to post pics of my American Lawman this weekend if I have time when I get back home. I've been stuck running up in northern Michigan for a few days, I'm in Alpena, MI right now and have a back haul tomorrow morning to get me back home

If youre contemplating the recon 1 just get one. I own the clip point, Its my daily carry, and NO its not too big. (especially considering that cold steel offers it in XL sizes!) It fits and rides comfortably in my jeans, both front and back pockets. You grow to appreciate its sturdiness. Its not some delicate little flickable folder. I own the CTS XHP steel model which is a fantastic steel if you can find one. I cant speak for the s30 models they offer now. I occasionally see old AUS8 versions on ebay, which is good stuff as well. It is a dependable folder, and I would trust it with my life, if it ever came down to that.
Like Mighty White said, they have similar models of varying sizes. The code 4 is a similar style knife with thinner aluminum scales that I've been eyballing quite a bit as of late...

Hey JSB, I didn't mention how comfortable the ergonomics of the Recon 1 are, the knife just melts into your hand and becomes part of you when you hold it, serious. Forward and reverse grip.
No American Lawman pics, I totally forgot until I came home and looked for it, but I gave that knife to one of my buddies. Sorry.
Anyways though, this was sitting in my mailbox when I got back home today
Cold Steel SR1 S35VN clip point blade (4 inch) G10 handle TRI AD lock
This knife is the folding version of the Cold Steel fixed blade SRK (search and rescue knife) that is standard issue to navy seals for BUDS training. I probably won't caryy this too often, it's going in my bugout bag

Look how thick the blade is, I think it's 5mm thick lol

Thanks for all the rundown and knowledge on the Cold Steel knives MW. Appreciate it. The ergonomics of the Recon 1 are definitely what attracts me to it - I see it being wonderful in the hand - so am gonna have a dig around on the store once it comes back online and will report back what I go with!

Beautiful blade but those sawteeth are a pet peeve of mine, they put them on everything and it just ruins the blade. That S&W would look so much better without them.

Especially when they put serrations on a small blade that has a tanto point too. Just about useless...

I even saw it on a stiletto. Are you for real? Sawing branches with a stiletto?
Moreover, it makes it illegal as a pocketknife in Holland because the law is that a pocket knife may have only one sharpened edge and - serrations count as edges, stupid but true.

I had no idea about pocket knife laws in Holland and I brought one with me to Amsterdam just because it is part of my every day routine sorta like putting on my pants.
The hostel I was staying at (Flying Pig Uptown the one by Vondell Park?) had a bar and I was sitting there drinking a beer and the bartender was complaining about her tip jar was stopped up and she thought she was losing tips.
I was like here girl I'll fix that for you and whipped out my pocket knife to carve the opening up a bit and you'd think I just pulled out a machine gun from the look on everyone's faces, lol.

I put maroon linen micarta scales and a titanium deep pocket clip on my Smock today. Holy shit there are a lot of tiny pieces in that knife to put back together. It is all part of what makes it so fidgety fun though.

Here's a Cold Steel Code 4
I have a Snaggletooth mod (aluminum) on the blade, was going to put the Snaggletooth on one of my Recon 1 but I like it on this knife. The Code 4 has smooth aluminum handles and is easier and faster to pull out of my pocket than either of my Recon 1 with G10, the G10 is kinda rough/coarse and a little harder to pull out as quick and smoothly. I really like my Code 4, it's light and slim and carries comfortable. Only issue might be, not the best grip if your hands are wet or bloody, I can see the smooth aluminum scales being slippery in those situations
CPM-S35VN spear point blade Aluminum handle TRI AD lock

I have a custom bronze anodized titanium deep carry pocket clip from Pops custom clips on the way for my Code 4, should be here by the end of this month
