Organic Composts for Pan. Cyans.
    #945765 - 10/09/02 01:12 PM (21 years, 5 months ago)

Greetings everyone,

Here's the tea.  Gonna start a grow of Pan. Cyans. in a few weeks.  I read Ralphster's awesome TEK here at shroomery and understand the process very well.  I also found tonight over at The Hawks Eye website, another TEK for growing these beauties.  It's pretty much the same TEK but T.H.E. mentions that you should spawn compost for better results and then consider dung as your second option.

My question is this...I found the following composts online, all 100% organic...I'm just curious as to which one you, my peers, would suggest using for spawning.

First

Second

Third

Please only respond if you have experience growing Pans...Cyans of Trops.

Thank you in advance for any advice and suggestions.

Love & Light,

Bop

PS - Do you think that these composts would be beneficial for spawning cubensis as well?

Straight manure will work better then any of those products!!!!

Compost you buy in stores is for Plants. It has already been broken down past the point you want to spawn with mushrooms. Most of these products will work, but yields will be drastically reduced, and they contaminate much faster then straight manure.

There are composts produced for plants, soil amendment. Then there are composts produced to grow mushrooms on. T.H.E is referring to compost produced for mushroom growing. Yields will be comparable to straight manure, when using this type of compost, maybe slightly higher.

Once your mushrooms have eaten the manure, or compost, it then becomes the compost you buy in stores. You can use it on your plants.

You can have success with the products you have listed, but it will be far better to just try and find some cow manure, or if you are gonna buy(mail order) try and locate some compost produced for growing mushrooms, not plants!!!

Horse manure works great as well.

If you can't find manure, it's probably best to case colonized grain.

Grain produces extremely small mushrooms, but you got to do what you got to do!!!

Thank you everyone for the advice! Considering I have two neighbors who both have horses...guess I'll have to start knocking on some doors later today. hehe

Thanks again for the advice!!

For Panaeolus cyanescens I recommend either a mixture of straw and manure, or straw alone. Cased off course.

Straw contaminates ALOT easier then straight manure. I guess it depends where you live, and how clean your spawn production can be, i.e Flow hood.

What yields do you get from STRAW? per square foot of cropping surface!!!

the greatest influence i've noticed, both in yeild and fruit size with straw is the depth of the substrate.

I am wondering What those yields are!!! Deeper substrate depths means more substrate per square foot cropping surface. Are your yields actually increased due to the Straw, or the increased quantity of substrate.

I have not seen any Pics of these LARGER pans that people relate to straw based substrates.

With straw I have run into serious contamination problems with the pans. Straw pasteurized in a single batch. Half going to a cubensis tray, and the other half going to a pan tray. The cubensis runs through it, and fruits, with no contamination. The pans run through it, but then contamination shows its ugly face.

I would assume my spawn is carrying the latent contaminant, but the same spawn innoculated into manure, DOES NOT CONTAMINATE!!

To me, it just isn't worth it I guess. Have had good SIZE and Yield with MANURE, minus the contamination problem.

Maybe the combination of manure and straw together might increase the success rate for _ _ !!!

With my pans they tend to be bigger(larger, greater cap diameter) on straw or straw/dung mix than dung alone.
Spawned with millet on each occasion.

Anno

Are you sterilizing or pasteurizing?

Do you find the millet to be less prone to contamination then rye grain?

Sterilizing. Similar than Una?s tek at mushmush.

>Do you find the millet to be less prone to contamination then rye grain?
Yes, I?d say so.

teonan, first off, i was thinking more of cubies. i kinda spaced that particular detail(beer). i've never had much luck with pans.
second, the depth of the substrate doesn't effetc the square footafe. i think you are thinking of cubic footage. at any rate, i don't have any figures for you but i'm sure someone else does.

{{{Straw contaminates ALOT easier then straight manure. I guess it depends where you live, and how clean your spawn production can be, i.e Flow hood. )))

I never have a prob with straw contaminating..Contamination comes for bigger spawn runs..I thought outside the box and put finely ground straw in pint jars..sterilize,,spores..case..fruit...on my 3rd generation straw based tropsabout to try some cyans from a respected friend...    Thanks big A
