Hughe decrepencies in liquid malt extract recipes

In a previous thread
Blue Helix suggest Agars receipe for liquid culture as follows:
Approx. 500ml H20 or about 0.5 quarts
2 grams malt extract
2 grams dextrose
Saying this is 2 percent barley and 2 percent dextrose
However it is actually 0.39 percent of each

Agar says
1000ml H20
1 level tablespoon each light dry malt (7 grams)
1 level tablespoon dry dextrose (7 grams)
This is 0.7 percent of each

Stamets suggest:
500ml H20
20 grams malt extract 
1 gram yeast
0.5 grams gypsum
2 grams sawdust.
This is approx 3.8 percent malt 
Stamets calls for a much sweeter wort

Agar why the variation?

Has anybody compared these liquid formulas? Does Stamets has any empirical reasons for suggesting sawdust in the media?  Do you think he is theorizing that mycelium will grow better if they encounter a future substrate during the liquid spawn run? He also suggest grain to be crushed and used in agar media in a very general way.

I followed agar's recipe recently.

1 tablespoon of each into 1 quart of water.

Within 1 week of inoculating with spores the myc was so thick I had to spend a minute or two breaking it up before I could suck it up into an 18g needle.

I didn't use a stir bar or anything other then occasional swirling.  Incubated at 75f +/- 2f on a shelf.

At 7 days after inoc, there were about a dozen quart circled myc balls plus various smaller ones.  This stuff is amber colored so it's hard to get a good pic, but I circled most of the myc balls to point them out.

I have not compared those specific recipes but have compared 1, 2, 3 and 4 % malt extract.

I found that while the 4% was quickest to first appearance of mycelium, after 7-8 days there was no discernible difference between amount of mycelia.

So for cost and ease of use (color of liquid and visibility) I have standardized on 2% malt extract.
