Police find over 6,000 pounds of marijuana in bales of hay

LAREDO -- Two Rio Grande Valley men were arrested in Dilley Sunday morning after 6,150 pounds of marijuana were found hidden inside bales of hay that they were pulling north on Interstate 35.
Mario Rene Issac, 24, of Edinburg, and Joe David Lopez, 43, of McAllen, face federal drug charges, Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Tela Mange said.
Dilley police made the sizable bust after stopping a Dodge Ram that ran a stop sign at the Highway 117 exit off of Interstate 35 at about 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Police Chief Santos Martinez said.
The pickup was pulling a Gooseneck trailer with 10 large bales of hay.
According to another source familiar with the arrests, police were suspicious of the trailer before pulling it over because Frio County is mostly ranchland and not farmland. Bales of hay usually travel in one direction.
"Hay doesn't go north in Frio County; it goes south," the source said.
The bales also weren't very compact.
The suspects agreed to a search of the truck and trailer, and that's when officers discovered 10 huge barrels inside each bale, each filled with bricks of marijuana.
DPS officers took the trailer to a ranch outside of Dilley to take a closer look.
"They had a container that was specially constructed to fit inside that bale of hay," the source familiar with the case said. "They rolled the hay around it and compressed the center of it to make it look like a regular bale of hay."
The marijuana was being tested at a DPS lab, Mange said.
The amount of pot being smuggled was significant, especially in the interior of the state.
The largest marijuana busts at the international bridges usually average between 1,000 and 2,000 pounds and hidden in tractor-trailers, said Customs and Border Protection spokesman Rick Pauza.
Customs agents have seen marijuana hidden in furniture and inside hollowed-out paving stones, but the bales of hay "is kind of unusual," Pauza said.
The largest pot bust in recent memory was 12,947 pounds discovered inside a tractor-trailer at the World Trade Bridge in Laredo in July 2003.
