Using a refridgerator as the area to grow?
    #946996 - 10/09/02 09:29 PM (14 years, 6 months ago)

Have been thinking of using a old fridge to hold casings and or jars. I figurerd i could cut holes into fridge and run needed lines and such. Though i figured would need to seal inside of fridge very good due to exposure to bacteria it might have had over the years. Has anyone seen or done this before? Any thoughts..? Anybody ..Anybody???

A fridge sounds good, you would just want to wash the interior thoroughly with bleach (no need to seal it).

My thought on sealing it would be as it fills with lots of humidity and heat, i cant get to the back side of the panels of the fridge where bacteria could be hiding. Wonders if that still would be a problem if i dont line with plastic or something...

You better clean out that fridge from top to bottom, so clean that you can eat off of it. I was out on vacation an unplugged my small fridge, but forgot to let all the ice melt off the freezer part so water was all over the inside. When I came back less than 4 weeks later there was this black spotted mold all over the inside.

Being a brewer, I thought of using a kegerator for growing azur indores; just experimentally at first. The neat thing about a "kegerator" is that the good homemade jobs is really a freezer with a temp gauge inside hooked up to the between the plug in the wall. This way you can bring the temp down real low in order to induce fruiting of azurs and I supose it could be used to help frost the sclerotia of morrells (but my knowledge base is weak with this process). Anyhow, I think kegerators are great because a reg fridge can only go down to like 40 and a freezer will go WAY down. Even a chest freezer with florescents mounted on top. Two square holes cut of the side for in/out of a 90cfm fan with flaps to hold the humity when not run to exchange air. Any how, just a thought. You can get the temp control from "Beer, Beer, and more Beer"; on the web and it is like $60. It keeps temp within like 4 degrees! of setting; throw some taps on and use it for corney kegs when the off season is present.
peace

What my pet rock Stoner's friend was going to do was maybe use the freezer part for the incubation of the jars and the when casing, them put them down in the fridge part, seems to be plently of room in there with many shelves. He recently purchased a 150 watt fish tank heater, am curious puttin it in a large cup of water in the fridge, along with piped in humidity , will it bring the temp of the fridge to the balmy 85 deg.? I understand the heater is a 12 in. long heater. Of course another heater will be needed in freezer part.

My pet skunk just put piped in humidity from an ultrasonic, some perlite and then an aquarium heater set to 85 degrees during colonization, then to 75 for fruiting.

skunk said it worked pretty good

My pet rocks friend wanted me to ask you , in what way did you use the perlite? in a big bowl alone with water or did you put perlite in water with the heater?? Please explain, i see from the picture of the type of fridge that is, with the fridge i was talking of has a seperate freezer door on top similar to yours, so i figured two seprate areas if needed. Wants all the ducks in row when the time comes, if you know what i mean..

the skunk put perlite in the drawer and removed the heater during fruiting

the temp inside the fridge stayed at 70-75 without the heater inside, so he removed it. There is a small plastic drawer at the bottom that was filled withperlite just to stabilize RH. humidity was also piped in through the back holes. The fridge was gutted because the cooling was not needed.

worked great

he's got a batch in there incubating

14 days
10 jars
8 jars are almost 100% colonized around the outside of the jar
