Pins and Verm barrier.....
    #946703 - 10/09/02 08:28 PM (16 years, 3 months ago)

So, this being my 1st grow and all... ive got more fun questions for yall......

Ive got about 5 cakes birthed now... 1 is kickin-ass with about 17 pins, the others are still growin mycellum (maz. are rhizo as HELL)

thing is, the cakes are growin fuzz balls all over, but the pins are only comin from the Verm. barrier....
is this quite normal? do cakes grow mushies from other spots on the cake? or do they mostly come from the verm barrier?
is there any way i could encourage them to grow from spots other than the verm barrier? or is that just the way things are?

there is also a slight yellowish discoloration on some of the cakes (near the tops)
this was there since they were in the jars...
perhaps the tops of the cakes are dried out? i dunked for 12 hours before birth.. and theres plenty of humidity and fresh air.....

any ideas? or am i just being a worry wart again?

The reason that the pins are growing from the verm layer is because it is acting as a mini casing, providing the mycelium with moisture. Don't worry about it, in fact there are some teks that call for a damp verm layer on the top of your cakes. And yes, the cake will produce fruit bodies from other places.
