Linux will probably never support anything...
    #9458201 - 12/18/08 07:32 PM (15 years, 3 months ago)

Just something I come across thought I would share.

From: torvalds@klaava.Helsinki.FI (Linus Benedict Torvalds)
Newsgroups: comp.os.minix
Subject: What would you like to see most in minix?
Summary: small poll for my new operating system
Message-ID: <1991Aug25.205708.9541@klaava. Helsinki.FI>

Hello everybody out there using minix - I'm doing a (free) operating system
(just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones.
This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any
feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat
(same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other
things). I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40),and things seem to
work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, andI'd
like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome,
but I won't promise I'll implement them :-) Linus (torvalds@kruuna.helsinki.fi)
PS. Yes - it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is
NOT protable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support
anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

I may have misread but it seems like the guy took linux source files, rebuilt it himself and asked people to test it out, then report back to him with errors.

I think hes saying his OS, minix, wont support anything, rather than linux.

I don't know much about linux though so......I don't know.

Yes, you totally misread it. The author is the guy who created Linux. That usenet post is the first time his new operating system was ever discussed - have a look at the date

I didn't notice the date.  That's crazy.  From what I've heard Linux can run anything windows or mac can.  But I guess that's just using emulators.  Linux itself can't support shit, I guess.

linux itself can do damn near anything, if not anything with just a little more know how, that windows and mac can do natively, without having to emulate.

peace

It's from 1991, they obviously support many filesystems, cards and programs now.

How biased.

lmao, that is written by the CREATOR of linux, known as Linus (hence the name of the OS) Torvolds...He is saying he is starting work on creating linux, and though it will never take off, it will be a fun little project for him, and is asking for suggestions.

come on people...this is the sci tech forum, this should be well known in here, and if its not, this post should edify you.

peace

It's clear from that usenet posting that Linus Torvalds is biased against Linux and we shouldn't take him seriously.

FWIW, I adopted my current screen name in 1996 because I honestly believed nobody would ever know what it was. Now, people wonder why in god's name I'm named after an extremely popular OS.
