If you want to find out if the spores are viable, try innoculating something with them.

Let's assume you are working with a psilocybian species. They should look ellipsoid when hydrated. Find the germ pore (a little crater at one end of the spore). From this pore, a hypha will emanate, and eventually grow into a hyphal network. When two spores meet, if these netoworks are compatible, the hyphal networks will meet and exchange genetic material and other jizm. You have just witnessed mushroom sex. The resulting dikaryotic (mated) mycelia is now fertile and capable of producing fruit-bodies (not that you would want to do that, its probably illegal).

Under light magnification, you should be able to see the presence of "clamp connections," which are little bridges from one cell to another. If these are not present, than your spores are still monokaryotic, infertile, and boring.
