Horrific Virus won't let me scan computer or download updates to anti-virus

I have downloaded a virus in a torrent the other day. I noticed it when my searches are all redirected to specific sites to my area. I tried using adaware and spybot, but my computer will restart and freeze when I run a full scan. I am thinking about reformatting my computer...It's already been a year and am thinking about putting on Ubuntu or some other linux flavor. Any thoughts of how I can get rid of this virus. I've tried safe mode, but that doesn't work correctly for me. Thanks.

restart in safe mode, hold the F8 key when it boots, it'll give you the menu
